a lot of people own cars that are no longer in production. lets take for example the bravo HGT. if an engine goes dead or some other exotic part of the car needs replacing , how come the company still makes those parts???

do they have an obligation for production of parts for some years or what??

good question - someone will know, it might be worth googling it and see what comes back.

at a guess, they do it because it is worth doing it - think how much a car costs in the first place. add to this servicing (not cheap) parts etc - i bet the manufacturer makes half of the car's value on average again - what with accidents, gear boxes failing/wearing out, engines, cambelt changes etc.

Usually most companies will continue to manufacture spare parts for 10 years after a car goes out of production. However, I believe that the 5-pot is no longer available new so it's re-cons only from now on. :(

They produce the parts for 5 to 10 years, after that you must buy from other companies. Just to add very little or none parts are produced by fiat, they are produced by other companies, fiat just puts them in fiat packaging. Eg. the clutch in EU is mainly from Waleo - france company. Many fiat parts are produced in Poland and other near buy countries. The reason why the original parts are pricey is the packaging. Eg. a front weal bearing bought at SKF/FAG is cheaper then the one bought at fiat, but are produced in the same factory.

?

so if an engine dies on the HGT after 8 years, or 10, what type of engine can i install there??

Re: ?

People still rebuild B-series, they went out of production in the early 80s, same with lots of ford engines, the Rover 3.5 V8, Fiat twin cam, etc....

As long as the major castings/forgings are good you can always rebuild an engine. If the bearings wear out you don't throw the engine away and get a new one.

so

if serviced well, how long can the HGT engine last? 250km? 200km? and by rebuilding you mean overall to the engine? but that will add maybe 50km more or so no?

Re: so

Rebuild makes it like a new engine if done correctly.

Re: so

You can get a new HGT engine from Fiat, but they have to import it especially for you.

Yours for a smidgen under £3000 ;)
A recon from Fiat is £1800.
