Punto mod noob HELP

Hey, im pritty knew to cars even though theyve been a part of my life since i was little and im now 19 just relising i missed a big oppertunity to learn and develop, instead i chose sport and uni.
but basicly my granddad who has bascily been my farther is an ex mechanic and has done everything from paint jobs to building cars from scratch, so he deffo knows his way around a car.
he bought me my first car a W reg punto 1.2 and it was burning oil so he pulled a few strings and got a brand new engine that had done 4k miles and put it in.
ive done minor things to it like soundsystem etc but i want to actualy mod it, change the exhaust etc bumpers even tinker with the engine a little,
but speaking with my grandad he says its not worth it and it could do more damage than good, for example with the exhaust he said its soo rusty for you to go and put a knew backbox on you could mess it up all together eg rattle etc, and that it would be more sensible to get a whole knew exhaust but only when its needed.

any ideas of what i could do with my punto, otherwise im thinking of getting a cheep fiesta ztec and do what i want to do with my punto with that

Unless you fancy throwing a lot of money at it, modifying a 1.2 8v is really not worth it. You'd be much better off at this stage in your driving career learning how to properly maintain a nice simple vehicle (which the Punto definitely is) - use the font of knowledge at your disposal to learn all about changing brakes, checking timing, adjusting clutches etc. Then, once you have a couple of years NCB behind you and know what you're doing, look at upgrading to a Sporting or HGT Punto (or a Zetec Fiesta, if you must ) and start throwing money at that instead

Audio is a good choice, at least with that when you decide to upgrade that can probably all come with you
