Hello I have a 2000 W reg punto mk2 and ever since I've owned it the intermittent front wiper setting doesn't work - it's almost exactly the same speed as the first normal setting.

Once in a while it will pause once or twice like it is supposed to! But there's no odd clicking sounds like other people have reported.

If any one has any idea why this is happening, I'd be very grateful for a reply! 3 years of this problem is finally getting on my nerves with the british weather these days!

By the way - I have had the electrical contacts / grease done! This didn't make a difference.

mine does that but I aint going to buy new motor to cure it, most of the time I just switch it off then back to intermittent & its ok.

This doesn't solve it for me unfortunately. They basically never ever go into intermittent mode. Once in a blue moon and only for a few seconds then carry on at normal setting speed!

Anyone got any ideas?
Thanks!

Hi mate,

Sounds like you may need a new stalk unit. The control for the intermittent function comes from the stalk unit itself. However, I personally wouldn't think it would be worth the cost of a new stalk unit just to get the intermittent function back.

Hope that helps,
Alan

After closer inspection, I do get the funny clicking noise aparantly coming from within the steering column...however I've never noticed this before! The wipers are still juddering a bit too so does this mean perhaps the motor contacts weren't cleaned correctly? Will this solve the problem if I take it apart and clean it? Also, will copper grease do as electrical conducting grease?

I really appreciate your help! Thanks!

try changing the relay?
which relay would I change? the one on the wiper motor itself or in the fusebox inside? I believe one of the red relays inside does something to do with the wipers - am I correct?

Thanks!

Hi mate,

Its certainly worth a try before you start replacing stalks or motors. Copper grease will be fine, you only need a small smearing. Theres a guide in the Punto guides section should you need it. Theres a relay that controls the power to the motor, but as the other functions are working normally, I would assume its functioning as normal.

I've seen it before with wipers that are juddering badly where it continus after each cycle rather than resting for the 3 seconds. So definately give it a go.

Do you have variable intermittent wipe? (little adjustble thing on the stalk that alows you to vay the amount of time in between each wipe)

No I don't have adjustable intermittent - just one setting, then normal and high speed. (I wish I did have it lol!) however I will try cleaning the contacts! Do you have a photo of the wiper motor with the cover off revealing which parts I have to clean and grease - As I think you wrote a guide for it but that particular photo was missing! Thanks ever so much for your help Alan!

Mike.

After looking at the guide... I presume the scuttle board is the plastic grill type thing below the windscreen? Is this simply detatched by removing the wipers and 3 small screws in the engine compartment?

A reply would be very cool - i dont want to end up buggering my car up! :p thanks!

Mikenous..just done mine a few weeks back. It's completely cured the original stop/start problem.

What I would say (and it's up to you but worked brilliantly in mine) is have a think about using some Comma White Spray Grease in the wiper gearbox.

I cleaned up the pinion that carries the metal plate that should be clean and also the two contacts that form the switch.

But once I was happy all was clean in there I sprayed the gearbox pretty much full of the above grease. It's been 100% ever since and is as smooth as ever. I also used the spray grease on the knuckles of the wiper linkages.

Good luck with it mate, its a piece of **** once you take it apart :)

Excellent thanks Shaun! Was going to give it a go today but it started raining on me! Did you have problems with intermittent setting then? Glad to hear this could solve it! It sounds quite simple to do the electrical grease part too! How do you get into the wiper gear box?

Thanks again for all of your help, Mike.

hello again#! went to do it today but couldn't get the wiper arms off after id taken the nut off without it feeling as if the whole front of the car was going to rip off with it! Am I doing something wrong?!

Hello mate,

Have just replied to your PM. You can do it without removing the windscreen wiper arms.

Hi everyone! Fixed the juddering by replacing the grease - great guides and advice thanks very much!!

~BUT~

The intermittent setting doesn't really work still. It pauses now more than it used to, but only for about half a second! Sounds as if there is a relay in the steering column or stalk that is clicking (not as bad as the juddering clicking) but it is quite random - so intermittent is basically exactly the same as 1st normal setting! Hope that makes sence!

Anymore advfice would be great!

Cheers Guys!
