hello everyone i have got a fiat punto mk1 60s that has done 52k. but it lacks in power so im thinking of putting a bigger engine in it. what is the biggest engine that i can get in it. and also thinking of getting bodywork, paintwork changed aswell. perlesant black with red tint. ow yes.

Hi dont think so m8 cos it only has a 1.2 anyway. but i am always open to sugestions

Hi there, I don't know what the average is with these little Fire engines but 52k is really low for a MK 1, I've a MK 1 60s myself which I got at late 70K and it's now 83K.

My 60s isn't amazing by any standard but it's not appalling, from what I understand so far the later 60s's had the 866 cam, it's referred to as this because that's what's printed on it, many say a better cam and if my memory serves me correct it provides more mid range power.

You could remove your cambelt cover if you feel competant enough and look to see which camshaft is fitted, ifyou haven't the 866 then this could well be an option for you, some state it adds 6hp, whilst not a lot, every little helps, right?

Other options are porting the throttle body, doing this may require a bigger butterfly valve.

A service may help, another option that you may want to look into is checking that the timing is accurate, I have found that going by apex markings near the crank, doesn't always result in tdc, timing could be retarded, whoever changed the timing belt on my car didn't do a very good job, and it was out.

Timing is easy to check and set, just familiarise yourself with where the markings are on the cam shaft, and the flywheel / bell housing, (you will need a mirror and a torch most probably) if timing is accurate then you can out rule that, if not, get it set properly.

There's also talk of using another ECU from one of the other Fiats, but you'd have to search that up because I forget which way round it is and what the results are. I think the short of it is that the ECU isn't as limited as some of the others are, it COULD be a 1.1 ECU but don't hold me to that.

There's also options of the P75 manifold and down pipe that's deemed less restrictive, fairly direct fit unsure if any modifications would be required,

Other than that you could possibly fit a 6 speed gearbox, (shorter gear ratios?)

P75 engines amd perhaps some 16v heads / engines would fit but not without modifications like wiring loom, ECU, etc.

im a quilified mechanic so i have checked timing thats good. everything that fits a normal car dont fit a punto 60s. i dont like how it revs high when doing 60plus. and i want acceloration improving abit. 0-60 10secs. is my target and i cant see me getting it from a 1.2. i wanted to fit a k&n air filter but the thottle body butterly hole was bigger than alot of normal cars. what u recommend to drop revs and increase acceloration. i know what will be said for revs

I've always thought that the 60s was high revving too anything over 60 MPH, I didn't like it either but it got me 198 miles x2 to Kent and back, mostly motorway miles at 70 MPH returning a very high MPG,

A little unsure about the butterfly hole and K&N comment, do you mean that you've had issues fitting a filter to the throttle body based on throttle body diameter?

If yes, when people go forced induction most use a 90 degree silicone bend, to this you could attach some stainless pipe, divert away from the engine and toward the battery, finally fit your filter with the required reducer, or some of the fire engines have a smaller cover that bolts to the throttle body that you could join to with a bit of silicone / pipe, then some piping, then the air filter etc, however I am unsure if the smaller throttle body cover fits 100% but it's something I've got to look into as I'm on with turbo charging.

If you have the top mount air filter like mine you could also fit a panel filter instead, but I don't think it will work wonders,

Lowering the revs and increasing acceleration is counter productive I think, going an inch or two bigger wheels may well decrease the high RPM over 60 a little, perhaps a fraction, it may or may not be noticable, I'm off 1 inch bigger wheels myself to help fill out the arches a little after lowering.

Increasing acceleration, perhaps the 6 speed box would help a little if the gear ratios are shorter, maybe someone can confirm this, otherwise your current options with this engine is either turbo charging, or Nitrous Oxide, a proper installed system wouldn't be as they portray on Fast & Furious or NFS, but it would bring those numbers down a little,

you ARE asking a lot there..,
the close-ratio box is good for 0-60 times, but "buzzy " at speed,

look at the posts in the Punto 2 section with the @150 bhp 1242 8 valve punto,
Charlie
