Around 2300-3100k rpm in both 2nd and 3rd gears, the car stutters and shakes a bit as the car is accelerating. But other gears accelerate smoothly. I tried cleaning the carburetor, changing sparks plug and air filter. I hear it could be the distributor cap and/or rotor. The distributor cap looks to be in bad shape, it's burnt at the tip. Could it be the fuel system? Maybe fuel cleaner may help?

Other than that the car runs ok and idles fine at 1000rpm.

to reason is your shifting gears like your in a hond, or more acuratlly a VW golf....... way to soon on an X! try waiting until 4k-5k then up shift, and i think you'll find it better accelerating, and more fun to drive. (y) try this..... you can run theses little mills up to 7500-8k w/o a problem:slayer: try it, and you'll love it!..... check & replace the other stuff too...also get a new timing belt on it ASAP, even if the one on it at purchase looked "new", unless you replaced it .

While I agree with the above it doesn't really solve the problem - the engine shouldn't be stuttering like that above 800rpm. It is interesting that it is only 2nd and 3rd that are affected, I would have expected the problem to be apparent in 1st gear too but then again how much time do you spend in 1st at those revs?

The distributor cap sounds like it is heavily worn - replace it as a matter of priority along with the rotor arm (and make sure you get the right one). Ideally the points and condenser (assuming you have them on your car) should be replaced. My guess would be you have an ignition timing problem possibly combined with an air leak.

Hello guys,

I think my car might be misfiring. It all started with the new spark plugs I installed last week. One of the plugs popped out while I was driving. I burnt out 2 of the 5 sockets of the distributor cap. I still drive my car around daily, so will the misfiring damage my engine in any way?

Thanks

" Slap!"... com'mon man!.. get that taken care of.! thats probably the problem. :D lol... "you'll be alright, i reccon:rolleyes: " but all joking aside get that fixed, replace timing belt& check for proper timing, make sure nothing is missing that conects to the motor . if the whole motor is shaking, you may wanna check the motor mounts and their bushings. im not trying to "bust your balls" here but, take your time and use alittle common sense and you'll be okay! (y)

It isn't the cap and rotor like I thought it was. Could it be my oil? It's recommended grade is 15w40. I put in 10w40. That's not going to affect anything right? I think the most noticeable is that the whole car shakes like it's in a hurricane once it hits 50mph. I also changed the fuel filter yesterday. I'm running out of options, anybody have any other suggestions?

UPDATE:

I took it to the mechanic and he told me it was the tires. At first I didn't believe him but he took off one of my tires that were already bad and replaced with the spare. Problem solved!! It drives very smooth now.

The problem was my tires were very worn out, they haven't been replaced in 10 years or so. And my threads were wearing down to the metal teeth. I'm getting a new set of tires tomorrow!

Now I'm happy! :woot:

There you go - exactly the sort of problem we would all have overlooked unless the car was actually infront of us!

A lesson to be learned though - make sure your tyres are in good nick! Leaving them until there is no rubber left is not a good idea...
