My 1994 Punto 55 has no temperature gauge at all, just a warning light that comes on in check mode when the ignition switch is turned to position 1. You can tell if the motor is getting over normal temperature as the noisy electric radiator fan starts up intermittently, or continually in very hot weather or climbing a long hill at full throttle.
I will never trust any electric temperature gauge after my Renault R385Ti seized up on a long climb on the A7/E15 while showing only slightly over normal temperature. Most sensors are not placed well, and do not show maximum temperatures, although the Punto sensor in the back of the head is reasonably good in this respect. Anything in the water feed or return pipes or thermostat housing is next to useless, the hottest parts are always just above the combustion chambers on the exhaust side.
