ed9 has a 'poxy 206' thread, so heres my poxy corsa thread

picture this: driving along the dual carriageway, its fairly quiet at 7:30am, and i'm in the overtaking lane cause its empty, and at 65mph i am the fastest thing on the road. so i'm catching up on a black corsa...with a low rear diffuser... and a massive spoiler... and limo tinted windows. i get closer and see his boot is completely smoothed.

however, he's still going slower than me. so i pass into the inside lane(thats the left one) with the intntion of passing him/her/it.. as i draw just about level i realise i am now doing 70 and the bastard is speeding up. the chav wants to race!(i decided they were a chav because i could park my car in their exhaust, and the spoiler would shade half the street on a sunnny day)

so, being a silly man, i took the bait, dropped my 1.8 Bravo into 4th gear, and nailed the accelerator. what happens? nowt tooo good! I get to 80, and the thing is leaving me. imagine racing a supra on a 1/4 mile. it felt kinda like that. by now the mofo must have been a clean 100 yards ahead?

Sense kicks in, so i slow to 70mph again. about a mile up the road i'm in a similar position, except this time they are on the inside and they 'allow me to pass'
as soon as i drew level i realised why. Pftiiishhh! yup, it was turbo'd. not only that, but further enquiries have uncovered the real reason he whupped me SoooooOOOoo badly. He's local (never noticed it before though) and recently has had a 2litre calibra turbo engine stuffed under his bonnet. i'm told he's running 200bhp, but the way it left me sitting at 70mph, i'd have said 400brake, lol.

so anyway, i've sin-binned myself for taking the bait from a suspected chav(although tbh he's not given that he can pay for all that work), AND for letting myself get beaten by a corsa. please dont taunt me, the shame is bad enough. i can only console myself with the fact that its not really a corsa anymore.

All I will say is if he drives it hard then you will be ale to laugh at him soon enough.

Either his turbo will blow or..........

the alloy head will let go.

Just wait and see

undertake

why did you attempt to undertake

your not allowed to undertake people...its in the highway code and everything!!!

i've seen the odd smash from undertaking.....people rarely check their driver mirror when overtaking (i have been guilty of this).....hardly anyone uses the passenger mirror when changing lanes as people are not supposed to undertake.....

don't feel bad about losing....your car looks far better no doubt

Re: undertake

who said i was undertaking?

i was passing him on the inside. making good progress and all that (you can fail a driving test for not making good progress!)

just a thought, but have you never passed someone on the inside?

anyway, if anyone is gonna criticise me, it'll be me ;) and i know it was stupid, and i'm not normally baited, but the car DID just look so chavvy, lol. i thought it was a stupid ned just sitting in the 'fast' lane.

HGT vs corsa 2ltr?

I had something similar today, a corsa was coming off a large motorway roundabout straight on to a dual carrige way, I was coming off another dual carrige way from the left turning left on a sort of slip road, I heard him accelerate so I did the same in 2nd, right up to 7000 rpm through the gears but he was pulling away, I hold my head in shame too Buzz :(

Would this of been 2ltr conversion?

Dan

Re: undertake

undertaking is perfectly fine because many of todays drivers find it perfectly legal to cruise in the middle lane for the whole of their journey(or fast lane on dual carraigeways)so if they ever try to pull across into me i will gladly give them a big scrape down the side and laugh when they challenge me!

Re: undertake

buzz did the corsa have huge twin oval exhausts, there is a guy near me who has a heavily modified black corsa with a 2.0 litre calibra engine,it is stupidly fast

undertaker

hmmmmmmmm

passing someone on the "inside lane" is undertaking....undertaking is going past someone on their left hand side, the side that is opposite to the driver.

Don't know what your on about trying to confuse "making good progress" and undertaking, you where on a dual carriageway/motorway for christs sake.....doing 65mph as you point out. I'm sure from a driving instructor point of view you should wait behind the car until it pulled over to the left hand lane and then only when its safe to overtake that you do so.

I think from an insurance point of view if someone is hogging the middle lane (i personally find this as bad as undertaking) and you undertake them and as you do they scrape into your car it will be the undertaker (hehe)that is approtioned the blame as your performing a dangerous manoeuvre and unfortuantly hogging the middle lane doesn't mean your doing anything dangerous, your just a crap driver!

I admit that i do undertake but only at speeds slower than 20mph and with a great sense of awareness but this tends to be in traffic situations.....not on the motorway/dual carriageway at 70mph

The safe bet really is if someone is "hogging" a lane and is not moving over is to flash your lights at them so they actually look in their rear mirror for once in their life!

Now this in itself is not really acceptable but its their fault for hogging the lane so they can move their ass over and take any risk that it entails....plus from an insurance point of view its not even a consideration that someone behind you flashed their lights so "you had to pull in front of a lorry without even checking a mirror" But.....don't tailgate.....even worse that is, just flash the lights alittle from the normal distance...they'll get the message.

Lecture over....

Re: undertaker

nah mate, to undertake, you have to be in the same lane, move left, pass them, then pull back out. Basically the opposite of overtaking (we'll stop short of doing it in reverse gear tho)
otherwise, its defined as passing on the inside. theres no law against it. Never been on a really busy motorway, and its had one of those stupid exits from the 'fast lane' or 'overtaking lane' ? when the traffic on those slows, do you slow too, so as not to pass them on the inside. what about when its a dual carriageway with lights, and the left lane that you are in is shorter than the right. do you not pass cars on the left? or in traffic jams etc?

before 'lecturing' (as you so put it, not me) you should maybe just be clear on my lexical choice here. i was very careful to state that i was passing on his inside, and not undertaking. undertaking is daft, because it means you are weaving in and out of traffic, and not following the flow of traffic. as i only changed lanes once in about a mile stretch (which is quiet early in the mornin) i think its safe to say that it was passing on the left, not undertaking. what i'll do though, is next time my sisters driving instuctor is round, i'll ask her if passing on the inside is the same as undertaking.

Re: undertaker

i think he's trying to say is, passing on the left IS undertaking which you can get pulled over for

Re: undertaker

..and i do understand what u were doing (i probably would've done the same), but your not really supposed to do it. You were pretty unlucky with the corsa though. Most of the chav mobiles are only 1.2 and under :)

Re: undertaker

everyone realise that the new Punto will be related to the Corsa?

Re: undertaker

Thats very true :(
