Power steering

Power steering

I've just come across this question while trying to research a similar situation on my 2011 X250 motorhome and felt I should ask in here to see what you make of it.

I was 350 miles into a holiday a week ago and the red steering wheel lit up. I switched off and back on again, as suggested in the handbook, and it went off. For just a few miles. This happened a couple of times until I was able to stop and have a looksie under the bonnet.

Nothing amiss although the fluid level was on or near the minimum. I topped up to the maximum with the correct fluid, but my light refused to extinguish.

I think the steering feels a little bit rougher, a bit grumbly, a little notchy when the light is on. Is that real or my imagination? When it's off there is the normal light feeling to the wheel.

After a couple hundred miles of the light on all the time (please don't fail I don't want to be recovered 600 miles home) it went off. And then it's all back to normal. One time it came on when I selected reverse and was about to let the clutch out - then it felt like something was about to drop off.

For 300 miles, then it did it again, just the once, and then back to normal all the way home. The steering was as precise and easy as it always is.

There's no code recorded that my unit can find, so what next? Maybe it's just a one off? Or is it a taster off what may fail when I next do a looooooong foreign journey next year, assuming we're allowed across the channel, as I'd rather do the work here myself than pay Pierre or Fritz their exaggerated prices.
