Hi,

New Member so be nice. I have just bought a Seicento Sporting Abarth(1999 Reg). It was advertised as having Power Steering but on closer inspection I cannot see a motor on the steering column. Is there a simple way that I can check? I have seen that on some websites it says that PAS was standard on Sporings but others say it was an optional extra. Sorry not very good with cars but know a man that is. Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

welcome to the forum (y)
look at the steering rack and look to see if its got pipes coming from it thats the big give away, or look to see if there is a power steering pump driven of the drive belt on engine (y)
it shoulnt be hard to tell without even opening the bonnet though simply turn the wheel at rest and listen for engine revs die a little, can you hear a pump working when moving the wheel at the same time ? and is the steering light when turning the wheel at rest.

hope this hepls :)

another quick test is with the engine off! apply pressure to the wheel right or left and start the engine,,,the steering should pull a little the way you are applying the force

fordcosworth, pointless looking for pumps etc as the power assistance is delivered by a motor attached to the steering column.

PAS was made standard as part of the facelift/mpi engine update from late 2000 onwards, a 99 car probablly won't have it as I think it was quite expensive.

ye cheers, as i say dint no if it was electric or not mate :)

Turn the engine on. Try to move steering wheel with your little finger. If you can, you've got power steering. If you break it, ring 112. Sei's PAS is very light.
