power steering failure

Hi, ive got a 2000 fiat punto (w reg) and ive had it 2 years. the car has run perfectly for its age never had any major issues and has being an amazing workhorse for me, other then the power steering which cuts out now and again and it only ever happens when im nearing full lock to the left or if i steer left sharply. Ive heard about steering column issues with puntos but wondered if this could be a different issue. really need to get it fixed since today i took a left and it failed and became so heavy i ended up in the middle of the road. i hope its not the steering column becuase i think they cost £900 for the parts. Anybody had the same issue?

forgot to mention that to fix the problem i have to turn the ignition of and restart it and it goes back to normal

There's so many things that can cause it ranging from an internal sensor to a duff battery so you really need to get it code read and work from there rather than just bunging bits on in hope.
