I'm looking for the heater fan resistor on a Fiat 500 1.2 Pop. Anyone got a picture of the position on a UK right hand drive car? I know it's behind the dash but not sure which side or how high up. Thanks in advance.

Difficult to see, more difficult to access.

Same as on Panda. Have a search in Panda as well as 500, there are several threads about this.

You need to stick your head down by the pedals. The resistor is fitted into the heater box, high up, just left of the clutch pedal. Held by a single screw, I think, then it 'just pulls out'. If only it were that simple. Difficult to get a driver on the screw, then once that is out, the resistor may just pull out, or may be quite stubborn. If it has overheated, it may have swelled a bit, becoming a bit larger than its hole. Will need much swearing.

If the fan works only on the highest speed, the resistor is the most likely culprit. If the fan does not work at all, or intermittently, or sometimes they work on all speeds after high speed, the fan motor is more likely. That is easier to get to, being on the left, and more accessible after the glovebox is removed.

Many thanks for your detailed response - I'll give it a go!

Tip:

If you have access to a meter

Once the fan is removed.. test the power to its plug
Should be 12v on full : #4

9v on #3 , 6v on #2 , 3v on #1

If that looks ok.. even if it just lights a test bulb..and dims with the lower fan speed settings

I have put a known 12 volts straight onto the fan motor.. see it spin.up.

You will have confidence where the problem lies :)

Do let us know what you find :)

Be cautious of the airbag isolator if you disturb the glovebox.. easy to break the wiring socket..

So I've located the resistor but I'm struggling to get the screw out. I can't seem to find a socket that fits perfectly - and it's hard to find out in that position! Anyone know the exact size please?
Also, is a mini ratchet the best option? Or is there a better tool?
I've tried extensions and bends with sockets but I'm starting to swear!
Any help is much appreciated! Thanks

There have been other threads on this, and 5.5mm rings a bell.

Significant swearing is inevitable.

The bottom pinch bolt on the steering column should come out easily, allowing the column to be moved away. There is a master spline, so only refits in one place. Pinch bolt should be replaced, and is 10.9 grade, not standard 8.8, but can be refitted until a new one is sourced.
