Thanks for the trouble with the images. Unfotunately they mean nothing to me. I do not knw which side of the engine is shown and which of the round objects is a welch plug.

Just a short description like 4 plugs front side or 1 between gearbox and engine or 1 below manifold would help. This time a word is worth a thousand pictures

Pic with the flywheel is the core plug inside the gearbox housing....the pic with the spark plugs is the back of the engine with the inlet ports...looks like 4 core plugs below those. last pic is of the front of the engine (Flywheel is on the right)
so would appear to be 4 on back, 3 in front and 1 on end (inside the gearbox housing)

Yes, one under the cambelt cover, mine came out under pressure when head gasket went.

Just found this doing a search.

I have a leak from the front left core plug. How likely is it that one (or more) of the other plugs are also leaking?.

Front and side one (crank) are fairly easy to get to - how difficult are the rear ones??

Having looked, the front ones look easy enough to replace .... I don't really want to spend too much on the car as its about ready for the heap - so am considering filling the external recess of the plug with either araldite or magic metal. I know its not best practice, but don't want to throw any significant money at it.

are you sure core plugs are leaking?

I know (pretty sure) the front left one is. Could visibly see the rusty coloured water mark and it was damp / wet in the recess of the plug itself.

Cant see where else it would come from.

double (and triple checked) and still getting ever so slightly damp in the recess of the plug.

I have a serious leak from one of the rear core plugs, definitely from there as can see it weeping / dribbling out.

Previous posts on here state three plugs front, four rear and one each side of the engine.

I haven't got the knowledge, time or equipment to remove the engine in order to replace them, which is the only way I can see of replacing the rear ones. So, I am just going to fill the recess of the plugs and seal them with liquid steel / metal. I also don't have the money to take it to a garage to get it done :( and personally dont think the car is worth the expense.

How easy is it to split the engine / gearbox to get at the one on the bell housing end, and would I lose any fluids (gearbox oil etc)

Should have said - Mk2b. 1.2 Active 8v
