Popping sound

car makes a popping sound when at about 80, has been intermittant but it did it this morning at 60.
any ideas

My 1.8 has done a similar thing ever since i had it but it normally makes a slight pop when changing down a gear, say from third to second. I've had a change of exhaust and engine since owning the car but this slight pop still exists. It doesn't do it all the time....just occasionally!

i had to change exhaust not long after having it as baffles in exhaust went. just unsure whether it is something to worry about. i thought at first it may be to do with the weather as it did seem to do it more when the weather was damp, so i suppose it could be linked i dunno???

is this sound coming from the engine bay, cos mine did this the other morning, was pushing the car a bit taking it upto like 5000 rpm and when i hit 5th doin about 60mph a sort of popping noise was coming from the engine bay???
