My 93 Uno Pacer makes a funny noise and has a vibration on the left front wheel, it can also be felt towards the middle of the car. This gets(sound) worse when the gear is in neutral and the car is still moving, as when going downhill.

I lifted the front wheels one by one and ran the engine, the car shakes violently when the left one is lifted but not when the right one is lifted. Having had mountings problems before I checked them and they are all fine. I've also checked the entire wheel, balljoint, driveshaft, etc and even put a new wheel bearing but the problem persists. There doesn't seem to be any other problems related to this except having to drive really slow.

I took it to this mechaanic and he said the pressure plate was worn thats whats and causing the vibration.

Anyone had the same problem or know how to fix this, would be greatly appreciated.

This overcomes my non existing knowledge by far, but

welcome to the forums! (y)

Hi there Juno, and welcome to the forum!

Most vibrations when driving are due to the wheel balancing being off. Does the steering wheel shake when you are driving too?

No the steering doesn't shake, the wheel alignment is somewhat off since i changed the bearings and all but I don't think thats the problem esp since it started when that was still ok. I'm hoping someone has had a similar problem as i don't want to go on changing the pressure plate before i'm totally surre. Thanks anyway guys.

you may have have had the clutch release bearing eat the pressure plate. but surely that would affect both driveshafts. if you remove the drive shaft. check the inner joint and refit could just be its not sitting straight or its worn.

Thanks tattyoldvan, i was also thinking the driveshaft could be bent or something so I'll definately check that zis w-end. I wasn't too keen on the pressure plate solution as it would be too much work  but as u've said that should be affecting both wheels.

I will be back...

I have had this vibration problem when the inner driveshaft joint (Tripode joint) loses one of its three bearings. They have needle rollers retained by a pressed-on steel ring. If the driveshaft gets a shunt (such as, in an accident) the ring can be damaged and the needle rollers work their way out into the gearbox (which sounds like a disaster, but there's a magnet in the casing that collects the needles).

So, I suggest removing the driveshaft(s) and checking those Tripode joints - look for all needle rollers being in place and the bearings not loose. You have to drain the gearbox oil to do this check, which is an inconvenience, but it sounds like you have already put quite a bit of time into finding this problem.

Heh, my driveshaft came loose from the CV, after the circlip holding it failed.... the car just made a noise like when you vibrate a ruler on your desk, but stil drove fine.

Alex is a bof on these cars, I'd follow his advice.

Well guys, zis w-end i got to it, took out the driveshaft & its rather too short to be bent as i'd suspected. I checked the tripod & it was still intact & ok, only minor scratches which are duly there, & it was only replaced last year.

So i decided to change it anyway as there seemed to be nothing wrong with the entire wheel & i was getting desperate. AND VOILLA, no more vibration. I dont know what de problem was but its gone, thanks a lot guys, u've been most helpful. J
