So as the title says I am trying to diagnose a whine coming from my engine bay. I can categorically rule out wheel bearings as the noise comes while idleing in my driveway as well as on the open road. Up to about 40mph the noise is present, but after that it usually quietens down though doesnt dissapear entirely, and not always does going at speed make it quieter. Sometimes I start the car and the noise isnt present (or is very quiet)

Putting the clutch in usually changes the noise, either makes it louder or makes it quieter.

It happens in all gears including neutral.

Checked the alternator belt and it would appear to be well tensioned and not too tight, though the sound would appear to be coming from that kind of area.

Havent removed the timing belt cover yet to look under it.

Sounds sometimes like a whine or the bottoms of two saucepans rubbing together.

Oil and coolant levels are fine.

Does anyone have any ideas? At the moment I am thinking oil pump or coolant pump, but not sure how to diagnose these?

Well if it happens when the clutch is pressed its on the engine. The candidates are alternator, alternator belt, timing belt, timing belt tensioner, and water pump.

You cab use a long screwdriver to act like a stethoscope to test different components. Like this

hmm it can only be the alternator, timing belt tensioner, oil pump or the water pump.

for me it was the water pump. it was causing this:

for a time Talons brand new timing belt pulley screeched like crazy. as it still rolled smooth i packed it with some high temperature grease and its not screeched since.

Clutch release bearing or gearbox input shaft bearing my thoughts

hmm if the sound goes away when you press the clutch in, you can rule out the gearbox as that becomes disconnected from the engine.

it could still be the clutch release bearing as that rotates pretty much all the time. though on a panda they only really make a noise when you have your foot off the clutch, and then they only rattle a little. my new one does.

do a video of it.. maybe i can diagnose it. i know the the screech i had, it changed as you revved the engine..

It might not be terribly clear in the video but there is a hissing/chatter that seems to be coming from the alternator and a whine from the passenger side which I now suspect to be the release bearing. There is also chatter from the top end of the engine but it has always been much like this, it gets regular oil and filter changes and I have also inspected the camshaft etc many times and know they are good and that the oil is getting to them so I am not too worried about that at the moment. But what are peoples thoughts on the other two noises?

Video is done mate :)

Have you change the water pump already?

I've bought new BGA pump for mine sisley, after few miles the whine noise was worse then on the old one.

The quality of aftermarket spares which are sold those days is really low.
Now i'm back on the old pump.
