Hi, i am new to the forum and i would appricate your help. my brother just finished fitting new clutch in my lovely sei, but i noticed a problem with steering wheel, when i turn the car to the right it seems to me the car is loosing power steering, and sometimes it is fine, but it is ok when i trun to the left, also the problem seems not all the time, is it electical loose connections or maybe steering arms, i am not sure. please please help me, i know that it will cost a lot of money if i go to fiat dealer.

Thanks
lucy

Hi rallycinq,

No the problem wasn't there at all before fitting the new clutch, do you think it is related to lower arm balljoints? or the electrical stuff?

Thanks rallycinq

Hi

I depends on what your brother took off to do the clutch. I don't disturb the balljoints when I do a clutch, but I would have a good look in the area where he worked in case something is in the wrong place, possible a brake hose under tension.

The EPS light would illuminate if there was something wrong with the system, and occasionally a faulty alternator can cause the EPS to fail, but in that case it would fail no matter which way you turned the wheel.

Cheers

Hi Rallycinq

Thanks alot for ur reply, the problem is not all the time the loss happen suddenly and then the power steering comes on? he had the manual haysen i guess , and he said he had to take the lower arms and he had some trouble in getting them out, but the balljoints are in good condition, do you think the problem might be to loose connection, cause the problem is not persistant.

Cheers

Thanks alot for the reply, i know that i have problem with the electrics in my car before the clutch job, the head lights flicker at night when the car in idle, and sometimes the when i am driving i feel the car looses power for a second, and then everything is normal. the light of EPS doesn't come on. I will ask him to check the wires again.

Thanks again

There are no PAS electrics anywhere near the gearboox. The PAS ECU sits in the passenger foot well and makes clutch cable changes on the PAS models a pain.

The ground heads off via a connector behind the dash, but not sure where it ends up.

I'd double check the gearbox earth strap is connected and secure, as it may be being fouled by a linkage etc.

If the PAS actually cuts out, then the steering goes REALLY heavy. Is this happening or is it just getting a lot heavier but stilll working?

To see how heavy the steering is when its properly disabled, either remove the Fuse behind the battery, or remove the connector from the PAS ECU.
