General Please help - Affordable tyres

What is the best option to source affordable tyres for the Ulysse?

Today the garage ordered some for me(£68 per tyre), but as they began fitting them they noticed that I needed a "high load bearing" tyre instead.

Should I just go for pirelli P6 (that came with the car)?

By far the best tyre we found is the Michelin HX MXM High Load, they are more expensive at around £100 each but they last a lot longer than Pirelli. They are the standard fit from Fiat to reduce the uneven wear on the 2002 onwards as well. We got over 30K miles out of out first set and we are now on a second set. Bearing in mind reports of 18K or less for some of the other brands it is worth the extra.

once oyu get the best online price then haggle with oyur local tyre places.fitting really costs them nothing and a small profit is better than none!

Mine are 205/65/V 15 From Big City Tyres in Nottingham they are called Cooper Premium Steel radial. I get between 25 to 30K from them on the front, twice that on the rear. They give good grip both wet and dry and they are quite. You should be paying about £140 for two fitted all in, because I do a lot of mileage I can't justify paying £200 plus for other makes, Pirelli or Michelin it doesn't make sense! they are not that much better.

I totally agree - we had P6s on as standard, and the Ulysse ate through them like there was no tomorrow. The dealership even recommended the Michelins, and I now have 4 on - wear is excellent.

I was going to put a claim in against FIAT, for fitting original tyres that weren't up for the purpose, but seemed like a futile exercise, etc.

most garages i speak to don't seem to be able to get hold of the tyre size

215/60 16

one that did get some for me then refused to fit them as Load index was too low (91). Would these have been ok?

That is the problem, you have to have high load tyres to stop the side walls deforming under load. That is why they went for the Michelin tyres as some cars were fitted with non reinforcement versions. I paid about £100 per tyre.

About £10 to £15 per corner, fitted and balanced.

unfortunately the local fitters it suggested for me were 30 miles away (I'm near central Milton Keynes)

My local tyre man got me tyres rated at 100H for only £45 including fitting and balancing.
He even whistled a tune while he put them on.

Not that cheap tyres aren't good, but I would want to see a test on tyres at £45.00. There was a good comparison in Auto Express last week and some of the low cost were in the top three, but others were terrible in wet and dry.

After all it is the only thing in contact with the road.

Not the P6s - good luck, they won't last long on the Ulysse, and I found them abysmal in the wet [I even had Pirellis on the Stilo at some stage] - I vowed never to buy Pirellis again....

I ordered the tyres on 20th, they confirmed the order the same day.

Then today I get an e-mail confirming delivery on the 28th, with a parcel tracking number that traces the tyres to being in Germany at the moment!

All very well, but it would have been nice to give me an option of cancelling rather than having to wait over a week.

Had I known I would have just stuck with the local garage ordering the Michelins

I had a bad experience with mytyres as well [will go back and dig out thread] - 3 weeks or so waiting, to then be told no stock.

Since then, I just use a local tyre dealer, who always comes down to the same 'net price, after including fitting, balancing, etc.

Waiting a week for a large item by mail isn't bad. Unless you pay courier prices with guaranteed delivery dates then you should wait upto 28days for delivery. Best to keep an eye on your tyres so its not such a shock when they are worn, giving you the time to order them online and make the saving.

I've bought tyres for the Marea, Bravo and Tipo from mytyres and apart from them trying to deliver when I wasn't home - my fault I guess - I've had no problems.
