Pipercross on HGT

I have a standard HGT that i'm starting to mod. Anybody got any advice on induction kits. Advantages and disadvantages of them? I have looked at a pipercross, can you fit this yourself? Do you need to reset the ecu afterwards? Does it affect the warranty?

pipercross

Yes you can fit the Pipercross kit yourself, it comes with an A4 page of instructions and an A4 page of pictures.
Disadvantages-you'll lose some low end torque but you'll gain a bit at the top of the revs range.
The pipercross kit also comes with a clearner, and a large piece of Samco Silicone Hose all for £80-85.
It sounds glorious you won't regret it.

Re: pipercross

sorry forgot to mention, when you fit it, disconnect the battery for around 10 mins. When you reconnect the battery let the car idle for 5 mins and then drive the car for around 10mins at various speeds and engine revs. This way the ecu will learn that theres now a greater air flow and adjust itself accordingly.

Re: Re: pipercross

Si is 100% right you will not regret it.

It sound amazing!!!

Probably the best sounding induction kit I've heard.

Low torque

Thanks for the info. Sorry, but I'm abit new to this, what does low end torque and high end revs mean. How will this effect the cars diverabilty? If I disconnect the battery will this effect the radio? Will I need to find my radio code?

Re: Low torque

Yes if you disconnect the battery I think you are going to need your radio code.

Ok-I'm not sure what the officil definition of torque is, but i'll try and explain what the car will be like to drive.
If you were to put your foot down (on the accelerator) if the engine revs are below around 3000rpm the car won't pull very strongly or quickly (i.e. accelerate). But as the revs rise above 3000rpm the engine pulls really strongly and when you hit 4500rpm it really starts to fly.
Like a Honda VTEC engine at low revs the cars quite sedate and not very quick, but if you use the gears and keep the engine revs above 3500 then it's really quick.
I'm sure someone else can explain this better, Nige, Patrick???

low torque

my 155 hgt seems to go slower when it reaches 4500 ive put a jr filter on it sounds great drinks fuel and goes slower when the loud induction sound comes in at 4500 is mine faulty?

induction this induction that

ive tried k+n and the piper cross because of heat under the bonnet the one cold air feed is not enough,so a made a carbon shroud to go around it and added another cold feed to it,it lost no bottom end grunt, mid range is much better to

Re: low torque

No lee its not faulty listen to this.

I know what I'm about to say may sound stupid but try it as you have nothing to lose.

A friend of mine had a mini 1275 4-5 years ago and he put a dirty K&N on it. (JR cones are very similar to K&N as you'll know) It made the car faster at low revs but slowed it down at about 4500. Just like yours. Any way we were at a Mini meet and we got talking to a bloke who'd had a similar problem with his. And some one in turn had told him to do this:

Basically put some ducting tape on to the underside of the filter as too much air was going in and causing some type of problem?!? he explained why but I cant remember. I'll ask my mate what the technical prob was tonight.

I didnt beleive this for a second as "the more cold air the better" but to our estonishment it atually worked!!!!

It made the Mini faster through out the rev range. I still cant beleive it to this day but it worked!

Also I know its a completley different Engine Injected and not on carbs etc but what have you got to loose? Try it........

And while were on the subjest of JR induction kits I've got one to fit 1.6/1.8 and HGT If you're interested please post.

Re: Re: low torque

Rob,

How much and what condition.

How do the JR's compare to the K&N/Pipercross.

Re: Re: Re: low torque

Perfect condition Chris. Never been used.

Looks exactly and sounds just like a K&N. I don't need it so I need to sell it.

MINI?

Yeah that sounds right about the mini - which forums this again???

That sounds like you were doing it on a standard carb....if the carb was set up properly it should have had the needle changed which changes the mixture settings by tiny amounts....keep trying different needles on a rolling road till you get a perfect power curve for all the way thru the revs.

I had a similar problem when i was setting up my turbo mini - it was completely modified engine so it was like finding a needle in a hay stack to get the right carb needle - theres about 2000 to choose from for each type of carb!

Dont know how much help this would be on a bravo - i guess the ecu cant cope properly with the airflow change - maybe a completely remappable ecu would do the trick?
