I know this topic has been covered before, but not recently that I can find. I'm hoping that another solution may have arrived in the mean time, and part of my query is not covered in the threads Search turns up.

I am looking for a phone mount to hold a Samsung Galaxy S2 in my GP (09 Active).

I have satnav on the phone (Sygic) and I'd like to continue to use that, so ideally the mount will be landscape or rotatable through 90 degrees.

Because I'll be using it for satnav I need the phone mount reasonably close to my field of view. And reasonably easy to reach to set-up as well as close enough to read clearly.

I've looked at the Brodit mount system, but this will only hold the phone in portrait mode, it partially obscures the vent, it appears it will completely obscure the Eco button above the stereo (not that my style of driving will use it, but my partner will also use the car and she might). Adding all these up it's not an optimal position, and the location is quite low for satnav use. The other Brodit mount would put the phone too far out of reach on the passenger side and is even more inconvenient for satnav use.

In previous cars I've used a window sucker mount, but the screen is a lot further forward with the GP.

The other problem is power. Using a phone for satnav is a battery killer and a power connection is needed. The 12V is behind the gear shift, and that's a long way from the windscreen. It puts a standard car charger at full stretch.

My current thinking is:
  • USB car charger adapter
  • Extra long USB to microUSB lead, ideally with right angle head into the adapter (if I can find one), run it along drivers side of the centre console, around the bottom of the dash on the drivers side and up to the driver's side quarterlight.
  • Window-sucker phone mount on the quarterlight
Has anyone come up with a better solution?

I mount my SatNav in that area of the windscreen you refer to (right lower corner, so to speak). I've used 4 clear-plastic "cable tidy" hooks, located (1) just below power port driver's side of centre console, (2) centre console beneath start of upper console, (3) left side of Steering wheel (but not on the steering wheel :D ), (4) right side of Speedo/Rev Counter cluster. My TomTom charging cable runs neatly around the centre console, under the Speedo/Rev Counter cluster, and up to the Tomtom.

Have a look at Mobilefun.co.uk for the things you're after - I've used them before and found them good.

Ahh, so you've run the cable over the steering column rather than under it. I think I'll give this a try.

Once I run the latest niggle to ground - my phone hasn't been charging when plugged into the car powerpoint. I suspect it's the charger, I think I have a spare.

Thanks Cadabena, but I really don't want to obscure buttons/vents if I can help it.

If you use a USB power adapter to charge your phone make sure its a 2 Amp one the 0.5 Amp and 1.1 Amp ones aren't powerful enough to charge a smart phone that is switched on..

At the moment I'm still using a standard car charger with built-in cigarette lighter adapter. I did have a problem with one and replaced it - the old one got thrown into the general clutter in the glove box. When I switched cars I've probably got the old charger lead and the new one muddles up. Serves me right for not throwing it away as soon as I replaced it.

But thanks for the tip - the S2 pulls a lot of power running in satnav mode, so I'll make sure I get the 2 amp.
