can a battery (88 ah) from a deisel van be used in a petrol van as a every day battery? the petrol van did have a 55 ah battery in it

If you mean as the normal engine starting and running battery, I see no reason why not, I have often fitted higher ampere batteries to mine and customers vehicles, as long as it will physically fit.
It is more of a problem on later computer controlled alternator charging systems.
If you mean as a "leisure battery" for a camper conversion in addition to the engines battery then you may find it unsuitable due to the characteristics of the two different uses.
