Hi,
Just needed to post to see if this price seems reasonable. Spooted a crack in the windscreen which is too big to repair, and got a quote from the RAC windscreen poeple....£302.53 inc VAt for fitting a new windscreen.....

erk.

Not a great start to the new year.:bang:

Cool. Will do.

I've got to wait a week, so i thought I'd use the time to shop around. But I'd love to know how much the windscreen actually costs. It's not like it's heated or anything, but I suppose it is quite a big screen, considering how much is hidden behind the dash, when you're in the car...

Guess that'll stop me replacing the stereo and the dodgy wheel trims as I'd hoped to do....

Check your insurance! There's often a windscreen clause where you only pay an excess of £50.00 to £100.00 for replacement if you use one of their nominated suppliers like Autoglass.

Also pop down to a Fiat dealer, they work with screen suppliers to make sure you get a screen with the proper tints, and the little black painty bits where the mirror is - your insurance may also cover a direct Fiat replacement....

Unfortunately I'm only TPFT insurance at the moment, due to saving some cash for a new bike.

I'll be phoning Autoglass, the local Fiat dealership, and a couple of local places today, to see how much the price varies.

How much difference was there between FC and TPFT usually there is little between them - if you go FC might save you in the long run, esopecially if you have an accident :(

I did the same thing with my coupe20vt. I was made redundant and couldnt afford fully comp so went for TPFT as a temp measure. I had an accident due to a part either being misfitted or the part itself. I have now lost thousands and I am paying for an investigagtion, which my insurance would be would have paid. (n)

its not worth the risk.

I will be investigating Fully Comp insurance this year, as it makes more sense now that I'm running an 04 Fiat, rather than a 1990 Nissan Micra!

Incidentally, for anyone who doesn't have insurance cover.

RAC Autoglass: £300. Waiting time one week.

Local firms: One quoted £148.79 plus VAT, the other has quoted £120+VAT. And both can do it tomorrow.

Wonder which one I'll be going with...

Check you're getting an identical screen, with the same tint, the same painty bits near the mirror and the border of 'dots' round the edge of the screen. If not they look terrible....

Yep....made sure of everything....don't want to be missing my dots......

Might even save up some cash to see if I can make other improvements...
cd player, new wheels....new engine?....:slayer:

Guys just turned up. Did the job in 30 minutes or so.

£141 including VAT, and it looks good as new, with all trim, dots and everything else.

24/7 Windscreens for anyone in Peterborough or the surrounding area....

Hurrah! We don't like to be without our dots!

Although I'm not sure about winscreen price felt that I should mention that I am on to my third windscreen in my 2 year old Panda!
I have never had this problem before in over 20 years on the road and not sure if its the design or increased traffic issue.
Fortunately for me replacement is inclusive with my car insurance.

Hi guys, and sorry for the thread resurrection.

We have a 2004 Mk3 Panda that our daughter bought brand new. It's done 111,000 miles now and is a dream to own and drive. We bought it from her in March 2023 at 106,000 miles as a second car.

However there is a crack developing in the front windscreen on the passenger side. I put a dab of felt pen on the inside at the top end of the crack(s) some few weeks ago, and another couple a week or so later ........ and the crack is spreading upwards. The cracks are some six or eight inches up fom the front scuttle at the moment, and no doubt will continue to migrate.

The car is insured TPFT.
No doubt the windscreen isn't included in the cover.
Having been a long-time Mini owner (had lots of them!) and later a Peugeot 205 owner, the 'screens can be done fairly easily DIY.
It seems to me that a 'modern' car has a bonded 'screen rather than one you can pull/push out and refit DIY.

What is the best way to replace the screen?
Can it be done DIY at all?

Thanks,
Mick.

Have to say I'd not attempt a bonded screen myself. These guys make it look so simple - it's not!

On the insurance front. We have always insured both cars fully comp but, last year, we were looking at what the Panda is now worth and thought it wasn't worth going fully comp and would be cheaper to insure third party. We were astonished to get a fully comp quote for Mrs J and I to drive the Panda which was actually a few bob less than third party!

You have to grind partway through the windscreen top laminated sheet if glass

Then gently hit with a center punch to create a bulls eye, the crack will stop here

Then you drop some very thin UV resin in and press from the inside to spread the crack move along and compillary action will draw the resin in

It's good but not 100% at certain angles you can still see it

Knowing how deep to grind and how hard to hit takes experience, and you have one shot at it,

Being on the passenger side it should still pass an MOT

A decent windscreen repair should be able to do for a reasonable amount, others only do chips

You can cut them out yourself with a bit of piano wire and a couple of sticks for handles, I cut a glass sunroof out myself to swap to another car as nobody was willing to risk doing it for me

Having said that the proper tools aren't that expensive these days especially on aliexpress

You can save labour by doing some of it yourself and finding a second hand screen, but still probably cheaper to get a mobile fitter to fit rather than buying bond, primer, activator

I do lots of DIY work on my car and think this is one I would leave to a professional. I had mine replaced on the drive a few years ago (on my FC insurance).
The main points for me is that it is a fiddly job and the parts will cost you a good portion of a professional replacement cost.
The saving does not feel worth the hassle, I would focus on finding a good deal to have it replaced instead.

Hi guys,
I called in at or local garage yesterday afternoon and asked them if they replaced windscreens.
Sadly, it was "no" and they suggested I contacted our insurance company.

Just checking our terms and conditions, we aren't covered for windscreen replacement under TPFT, though Fully Comp we would be.
We renewed only in late Mach. They would smell a rat if we re-negotiated for FC and then claimed for a new windscreen.

Mick.
