Panda 2012+  Panda Easy

Like many senior citizen's, she has began leaking and is leaving behind her a little puddles. These problems turned into unusual noises then into a dramatic loss of speed. Her heart is good but her wheels won't move her anything over a craw.

Introduction

In the first few months Garages refused to return our calls. When one did at first we were overjoyed, then it turned to sadness when they quoted £1700 for the gearbox and clutch. So our beloved Panda returned home to sit on our driveway. Where she is currently having surgery. Her gearbox is currently in little bits, spread between multiply different boxes. These will soon all be coming indoors to a ultrasonic cleaning tank. Once I have finished cleaning all the metal filings out and then I can start putting in the new bearings. Hopefully I can remember where everything goes and I don't have any spare bits when I finished.

Many people think that the oil in the car's gearbox does not need to be changed. This is a big misconception. This problem can be prevented by following the replacement intervals in the car's user manual. This is especially important for Fiats. This error, if it is not caused by a factory defect, then there is no recall. The reason for this error is usually that the transmission oil is not changed on time. And the lubricating ability of the fluid decreases, and the proportion of aprometallic particles constantly increases due to the natural wear of metal parts. Therefore, friction increases. As a result, the bearing on both sides of the differential usually starts to hang out sooner on the right side, and its play increases. As a result, the oil seal wears out. Then the car leaves oil marks, but it works, then we use it without oil but it still works. Then when a bearing falls apart, it stops. But these are replaceable parts. If there is no visible wear or broken teeth on the gears. Also, the bearing housings are not worn out due to faulty bearings, so it can be repaired. It is worth replacing all the bearings and seals. Then the next important step is to periodically change the lubricating fluid. That way, there will be no problems with it later.
I have already bought a car with such a defect, I reported this defect to the seller and bought the car cheaper accordingly. In this car, it did not cause any problems with the transmission operation, but there was no oil in it, it was already running dry.
Finally, I managed to order the necessary parts from Poland. The two differential bearings and the two seals cost €37 with shipping. (I bought the parts from a Fiat-Iveco service in original Italian parts factory packaging.) Then I installed them with a few hours of work. I have never had any problems with it again, I have driven it for more than 150,000 km. The current owner also uses it daily in city traffic without any problems.

Totally agree. 30K is enough for any oil anywhere! Ive found the quality of gear change improved a lot on every car make and model Ive done the oil on.
My TA has just had the rear axle oil done and its deinitely quieter after 32000 miles. Sealed for life... This is just stupidity in my book.

I got the paperwork stating my other Panda had been serviced regularly, last time was in Jan this year. But 2 months later [on my first drive], it sounded a little noisy so checked the gear oil, it needed a 500 ml top up! I really don't trust Garages they happerly put white grease on the door hinges and to most people they must have done a good job. But I keep finding things that are hard to check, that don't get done because they think no one will ever look.

Yes, I don't trust my car to anyone else either. Because when I was a novice driver, I also took my cars to a repair shop (I was 18 years old). I also experienced this problem. I saw that there were discrepancies between the repairs invoiced and the ones carried out. That's why I service all my cars myself. I only take them to a specialist workshop for a technical inspection. The repairs are much cheaper this way and are guaranteed to be done. I have never had a car fail. My technical inspection has never cost more than 50 euros.

I second that. My daughter’s TA was jumping out of 5th regularly when we first got it. After I changed the gearbox oil, the gear change was much better and it hasn’t jumped out of gear since.

I agree, but
Panda owners' manual doesn't specify to change the transmission oil at all
Only to check level every 80k km
Filled for life 🙁

Which is a terrible suggestion, results in oil never getting changed, owners not checking the level

I check the gearbox oil level twice a year
It's easy on the Panda, 12mm hex plug on front of 'box is accessible from above with the car on level ground

Exactly the same thing applies to brake AND clutch fluid, and power steering fluid. The cluch doesnt even get heated to help evapouration. 2 years or so is enough. The colour it turns is enough of a flag to me.
