Hi

I have an M plate Panda Colour, the 5 speed box whined like mad (yes, full of oil - ha ha), and now sounds like a bag of spammers, and 5th doesn't work - move the lever into 5th, let the clutch up, and nothing happens).

It is time to remove it, and fit a donor box.

What donor gearboxes are a straight swap (eg Panda 900 cable type, Cinq Sporting etc etc)

Cheers
Andy

the cinq sporting box should be a dead swap if cable operated./

5th gear on these gearboxes can be replaced quite easily by removing the pass side wheel and just taking the end cap off the gear box. you don't even need to drain the oil!

if 5th does not select it will be because the 5th selector fork has worn down.
this happens if you rest your knee on the gearstick when driving. (its something that i think happened in my old 4x4 gearbox)

you should be able to replace the selector fork really easy. as far as i remember they are only held on with a grub screw.

(i would actually replace all the 5th gear components.. the 2 gears, the synchromesh ring and the selector fork)

you could replace it from one from a cinq sporting, punto 1.1 or another panda gearbox (cable or rod operated).

my guess was that 5th was the only gear that whined?

as always keep checking the condition of the inner CV boots and dont forget to check the gearbox oil level

this is how it looks when its at the right level:

looks like this when filled to correct level:
