Hi all , My dad has a 98 Pajero 2.8td , which has electrical troubles.

It was stood for a while and wouldn't start , so it had two new batteries fitted , new set of glow plugs and buzz bar.

A week later the car wouldn't start, got it going and checked the batteries, was only getting 10 - 11v through the batteries, alternator took off and checked, perfectly fine.

Put the alternator on today , jumped the car and the batteries were showing 10 v through them, this started to slowly increase and after 25 min of the car idle it was registering as 14.10v charging ( all well and good).

An hour later , go to start the car , turns over and dies.

Any one have any ideas as why this is happening.

Cheers

measure voltage at the alternator itself (on the outputs three terminals normally) the 2 big wires is what you want one is live other is negative (earth) the other tiny one is the failure warning link for the dash.......

i would guess it should be shoving out 14v ish.....

next using your probes meter the live on the alternator to the negative on the battery

What you get? if its low you have a earth fault or broken earth strap

again do the same but live on the battery to the neg on the alternator..... just to double check

hi , the engine is charging now , suspected fuse , however the earth starp keeps on smoking, burning out, been replaced with wire and still burning out when the car is trying to start.

What would cause the earth to fry ?

Cheers
