Ok, I'm sure we've all heard rumours of insurance companies not paying out cos of painted brakes, but doesn anyone have proof?

But they are well within their rights not to pay out, as it is a modification that isnt covered by the insurance contratct unless stated.
Would it depend what colour? If you paint them black then I wouldn't think that would matter. To be fair though if you told your insurance and they said that will be another 10% please I'd tell them where to go!

Something we can all agree on is that insurance is a minefield! Using non-fiat oem spec parts.. is that a mod? etc..

If you make a claim, the insurance company are gonna try to screw you from the outset. But if you stand your ground and make a reasonable argument (e.g. that you painted the calliper in order to prevent it from rusting, thus maintaining its effectiveness and preventing deterioration in braking performance) then you may be able to talk your way out of any trouble. Or maybe not.
If you were involved in an accident with painted callipers chances are they would pay up.
If your car were to be stolen and it had painted callipers they could argue that you made your car more "attractive" and thats why it was stolen so you cannot have no cash on this occasion.

oh common, i meant it in a performance / comsmetic way.... if u change, or modify your car from the way it rolled out of the factory then in a perfect world u should declare it, weather or not it changes your policy!!!
but as u said, somethin like painted calipers can be called a "repair", however, if it was a straight repair which required painting, it could be argued that they should be painted black like they were made... and that painting them another colour makes the car more desirable as it leads on to thinkin "oh, if he has done this, wat else has been done" and in terms of insurance, the more desirable a car is, the more expensive the policy is.

on sayin that, your insurance company would prob, just say "oh thats great, cheers
" and not give a rats ass..... im just sayin that on my certificate it says "if the car is different in any way to wat is stated in the policy then the policy could be invalid" blah blah blah
