will be refurbing my steel wheels soon and wanted to get a nice smooth finish on them, was curious on what is the best way to strip the paint on them without damaging the wheel/tyre. (tyres will be kept on during the process)
its easyier if you were to take the tyres of but if thats not possible you'd be best getting a wire brush attachment for a grinder and going over the wheels with it till you have a clean surface then going over the wheel with some wet and dry paper just to smooth the surface out ready for painting .
thanks guys. it needs to be done on the cheap, otherwise id have them shot blasted and powder coated. its a rattle can job im afraid, but no harm in trying to get a reasonable finish on them. will see if i can borrow a dremmel and try that out.
I've just done my Panda wheels, I did them with paint stripper first and then a wire wheel in a drill to remove the left over rust and paint. I let the tyre down completely and then pushed some plastic bags around the rim to protect the tyre.
got it all sorted. had the tyre beads broke, removed the valve and got me a dremel to wire brush it all down... will also borrow a full sized wire wheel bit for a drill to strip it all back. will keep me busy for a while. lol
whats the best way to prep the surface for primer without using panel wipes? washing up liquid and a GOOD rinse off afterwards? i dont want to strip everything back again because the paint didnt take.
