Part 1: -

Well, picked up the keys to my Black 1.2 Active 5 Door 6-Speed Stilo today so here's the story: -

Picked it up and thought "My God! That's even uglier than in the pictures but let's keep an open mind". Have to admit that after all the other cars I've had as hire cars I realished the chance of some new Torino-Metal.

Anyway, had to go home first to pick up my stuff for my bidness trip (Yes Alan, I'm still to pissed to spell it properly!!lol).

So, go to hang my suits and shirts in the rear and notice that the passenger side door is open. Lo and behold, the central locking doesn't work on the passenger door! Fault 1.

Anyway, hang my suits in the back and the handle falls off! My God Fiat, the build quality on this thing is already seriously suspect!. So, go round the other side of the car to hang my shirts up and the door handle comes off in my hand! Jesus! The plastic that the handle is made of reminds me of the coffe stirrers we use at work. And we complain about the Bravo handles. I tell ya, the Bravo handles look like they are made of some serios space-age material compared to this.

So, how does it drive? well, as per usual it's extremely nippy and I can't believe it's just a 1.2. The sixth gear gives you a nice quiet ride on the motorway at naughty MPH but unfortunately means lots of gear changing at the mereest sign of a 1:2000 incline. Shame. Handling is vastly superior to the 307 and Golf that I have recently driven and the 1.2 engine is actually much more refind and responsive than the 1.6 in both of the others.

So, let's forget the exterior as we all know what I think of that and move on to the interior. There are some nice touches like the contoured bottle holders in the door pockets that are ideal for the 500ml bottles of Diet Coke that usually litter my car but unfortunately the handle restricts access to the bottle making it difficult to extract. The interior colour scheme is very drab but subtle and the lack of a CD player is quite infuriating. Never-the-less, the stereo isn't too bad. far too many German influences in here though including the dials, door lock pins and the horrible rubber dashboard! Very much like sitting in any other VAG car.

Considering it's a 1.2 the spec is very good: - Electric windows and mirrors, air con, trip computer(although the fact that it is always flashing at you is really annoying), ABS, PAS (far too light at speed but great for parking), and warning lights for everything bar "Your bowels are full - please take a ****!"

Now, down to the last word and here's some advice for anyone thinking of "Upgrading" their Bravo/a to a Stilo: - DON'T!!!! Having driven a Leon and Toledo earlier in the year they are by far superior to this Stilo. I hate having to say that as I am an Italian-Metal fan through and through but if this is the best that Fiat can do then they should scrap the marque and seriosly push Lancia to the fore.

More updates to come as I have this for the next 5 days while I am down in sunny Hove.

i have heard from a friend that the 3 door version of the Stilo is far superior in terms of looks and driveability,......anyone drove one ?

and what about the Abarth version. (not the shitty selespeed one)it certainly looks the part and has had some great reviews.

i seen a review of the Stilo GT (without the paddles) in Autocar and they said it was good! They say its not as hot as the Civic VTR or the Focus RS but then its much cheaper and doesnt have 200+Bhp. I hope fiat go crazy and do a Turbocharged version with 220bhp or something - that would give it some real cred.

Nice review Ozric- you could give Clarkson a run for his money!

We had a Stilo debate on here when they first came out and opinion was truly divided. So much so that I went out and test drove an Abarth Stilo with the Selespeed box.

In brief, it was a lovely car to drive. Even though it's engine is an evolution of the Bravo's 2.0L 20v lump, the extra 15bhp and .4L seems to be there to compensate for the heavier car and to conform with EU regs. It's way more refined than the HGT, but then there is almost a decade of development between them. I hope someone soon gets hold of this engine and plays around with it, because I believe there is potential in it.

I found it more akin to a tourer. A car that can soak up the miles in comfort, with plenty of toys to make the journey a breeze. Not as raw and raucous as the HGT, but classier.

Many people slated the Selespeed. I would hazard a guess that these people have never driven a semi automatic before and that they are driving it like they would a manual. It takes some getting used to, but within half an hour or so, I was changing up and down, using both paddles and stick, and it was as smooth as my new daughters bum :)

But Sophia is a sweetie mate. No getting away from the ugliness of the Stilo really.

Quick update, found the "City" button today which is supposed to make town drving easier. Well, either it's a gimmick or like the door handles it's broken as it makes absolutely bog-all difference.

On the interior, the housing for the cabin light is most peculiar. I'm guessing it's for putting your sunglasses in but anything I put in it just falls out as soon as you pull away. Really just looks like they have put it on the wrong way round or perhaps it's for the high-level brake light and they put it in the wrong end of the car. Odd!

As for all the interior trim the German influence continus. I'd swear that the dials, rubberised dash, door pins etc. are straight out of a VAG car and as for the interior door handles, they stand out like a sore thunmb. The majority of the interior is black or charcoal grey but these look like elephants arse grey shoehorns just stuck on for a joke. Absolutely hideous.

I'm really trying to like this car but bugger me Fiat, you're making it hard. The drive is pretty good though although I can't get the seat any nearer than about 15ins from the floor. Feels like I'm driving a bus.

Hopefully the 3-door is a lot better.

Perv! Someone call the police! :)

Aw, come on....don't tell me no one has ever marvelled at the smoothness of their baby's bum ????? :)

Rob

OMG! you pressed the city button?!?

Thats the lady driver button!

lightens the PAS for parking

you wuss!

I want to die peacefully in my sleep like grandpa, not screaming like the passengers in his car!

My baby's bum has some nice lateral scratches where some tosser in a TWOC'd car left the road and entered our car park via an unauthorised route, i.e. fence and hedge.
Luckily it was a glancing blow. Superficial damage only to Bravo.
The TWOC'er left the scene, and the car embedded in a tree, or more to the point, a tree embedded in the bonnet.

Mark.

To bring this back onto the Stilo theme for a moment before we all go off to Glitterland..
I have driven many Stilo's now and they have grown on me more and more. It has to be in the right colour with the right amount of doors though :)
The 5 door has been dubbed the Allegro by most of the owners, including John, from the club who has one.
The 3 door in Black with the JTD engine is superb IMO :). The build quality on them is better than the Bravo/a and the interior is modern and a nicer place to be, which it should be given the 8 or so years between the design.
Andy is thinking about one as a replacement for his Coupe....
