Overheating problems.

While coming home last night my temp gauge was very erratic going from just past half way to maxed out.

Can any one offer any advice on what this could possibly caused by?

I have 1.6 hlx, on a 99 T plate.

does the heater still work?

The heater works as does the fan, have been told it could be a dodgy thermostat?

Any advie on this subject would be appreciated.

Next time it goes up, give the dash a quick 'smack' above the gauge, that should sort it out...
