Good day . 2020 Fiat Ducato. Besides literally over flowing when filling up with AdBlue Can you actually overfill it please? As in has in got a sensor like the VWs have and are a real pain.

My 2020 manufactured Ducato must have an AdBlue level sensor because I can read the level of Adblue in the tank when connecting my chromebook through the Google car scanner app. But there is nothing fitted to the vehicle that enables you to read the level - until the low level warning appears on the dashboard display. You are supposed to wait till the low level warning comes on and then add about 10 litres.
But I have filled mine to overflowing many times - doesn't appear to have damaged anything.
The only damage I have heard of is the vent hole in the filler cap becoming blocked by caked on AdBlue, causing a collapsed AdBlue tank and £1800 bill.
So I have drilled out the vent hole in my filler cap slightly bigger, so I can clear it with a bent paper clip.

filling to the brim is a no-no.
Why?
I'm not disagreeing with you.
You could be right.
I might just have been lucky in doing it many times and getting away with it
But it would be interesting to know what I am risking

I can see using a filling station pump is preferable.
Apart from anything else its likely to be cheaper
If I knew of a convenient filling station with an AdBlue pump I would use it.
All I see is it being sold in bottles at widely varying prices.
So I just buy a bottle when I see it cheap

Apparently, it degrades in direct sunlight, so if buying bottles, beware.

From what I have read the active ingredient (Urea) loses about half its strength in 30 years, depending on how its stored
As you say, sunlight will speed it up a bit.
But apparently nobody has thought it serious enough to use opaque bottles.
Thats strength it loses - not effectiveness.
As in using half as much detergent won't leave your washing twice as dirty.
But any loss of effectiveness increases emissions
Even if only by 1% no manufacturer can say increasing emissions is OK!!! - that would be a PR disaster for them.
I have used AdBlue from translucent bottles and 3 years out of date with no issues.
May have increased my emissions by 1%
Which is probably more environmentally friendly than chucking it and using fresh when you consider the large amount of fossil fuel burned to produce AdBlue?

I can see that filling to the brim is a no-no if the vent is blocked with dried AdBlu - expansion increasing the pressure etc
But I am not aware of any other reason
And I make sure the vent in my AdBlue cap is clear
The original vent hole is very small - more suited to stuff like diesel that does not dry out and block it.
