Hey guys,

Just got me a Nokia N95, downloaded Tom Tom Mobile thinking it would work with the internal GPS receiver, but this doesn't seem to be the case. So anyone got any tips or suggestions of what to use instead? I don't really want to use a bluetooth GPS device.

Cheers,

Garry

The current version of TT Navigator for Symbian devices does not officially support the internal GPS. However, there is an un-official, 3rd party patch knocking about that can fix this. Try Googling for it. I also believe that Ade, who visits these parts may have it or know someone who does.

TBH, the internal GPS on the N95 is pretty poor. You can use Nokia's own Sat Nav, Maps, but again this is poor in comparison to TomTom. I'm sure TT will release an official patch soon, but even if they do, the weak GPS built into the phone will let you down, particularly in urban jungle.

Now, if you want a good 'un, try eBay for a decent 44 or 52 channel device. My 44 channel device works great, even in London. I can even use it with it stashed in my glovebox and it still gets more sat's than my 16 channel did in open air ! It even works indoors. £35 inc P+P.

Trust me. It is currently the best way to go, until Nokia manage to squeeze at least 32 channel receivers in to a phone.

The N95 TomTom patch does not exist. Despite what people say. The only app good enough to use on the N95 is Route66 which works with the inbuilt GPS in the phone.

As Roberto stated though the reception of the N95's internal gps is quite poor. You will be to an advantage with a seperate GPS device.

The one i have is connected up to my car, so it charges when i drive the car. It switches on when a bluetooth signal is nearby and turns itself off when inactive. It works indoors and i mean indoors, i.e under a two foot concrete ceiling and roof and will work anywhere in my car. I have it hidden and wired in behind my dashboard. To get it out i need to take some of my dashboard apart. Its a permanent feature i've installed for myself. If not in use it automatically powers off, but i have fitted a switch to completely disconnect it from its power source on the car just incase the inevitable happens and it drains my battery.
All i do is get in my car, set my Tomtom up on my N95, pair with the GPS and drive. I don't ever worry about my GPS device. When i get to my destination, i turn my phones Tomtom off, pick up my phone and lock the car. No need to mess with the GPS reciever at all.

Cost me £35 delivered at the time now. Rated one of the best receivers.

Route 66 Mobile7 from v7.3.468 - it's ok for UK, but have a little problem with longer trip

Garmin Mobile XT from v4.10.20 - on my n95 8gb show wrong position about 200 yards

Sygic Mobile v7.0.89 - so far, so good. it's look like a tomtom clone

sorry for my english

I've got Sygic Mobile on my N95, its good but not better than Tomtom in my opinion. I have it as a backup incase im out and dont have my car/gps receiver and i want to get somewhere.

Works well with the N95 i must admit and the internal gps receiver.

Okay, shame about Tom Tom, but I'll look forward to future versions. I'll try the ones you guys suggested rather than get an external GPS reciever. I convinced myself to get this phone as I'd not need to buy an MP3 player, satnav or a camera. It's a great phone I think.

Cheers,

Garry
