OK, so you're sat in a strange car - hire car, mate's car, company car, whatever. You need fuel. Which side is the filler cap?

I've recently been sent an email which says that the fuel pump icon on fuel gauges tells you which side it's on by the side the hose is shown on the pump. Is this right?

Hmm. I'm not too sure on this. Just checked my previous cars pics (Renault Megane, Citroen ZX) and they both have "gas on right" icon, which is correct.

However, shouldn't the images be the other way around really? I mean, if you pull up to a pump like pictured, the hose will be on the wrong side to get to your filler cap?

I've heard of this before and for the most part, it does seem to be accurate, but some people provided evidence to the contrary.

This is my Marea dash....

And that is showing it correctly.

Nice idea, but it's an old wive's tale, I'm afraid.

My Marea is of course the same as Roberto's and everyone else's, filler cap and hose icon on the right - this is the norm for cars originaly designed as LHD.

My 2003 Daihatsu however, (like most Japanese cars) has the fuel filler on the other left-hand side, ('correct' for RHD vehicles) but the guage's hose is still on the right-hand side of the pump icon.

not really noticed what way they faced on previous cars to be honest.

doesn't matter really as the hose is usually long enough to reach the far side of the car anyway:)

On my Mondeo the hose is on the same side as the filler cap (further supporting your theory) AND there's also an arrow next to the pump icon pointing to the right to indicate that's where the fuel cap is. Must say I never noticed it before.

OK, I'm gonna keep checking on this one. Being a regular hire car user I get to drive many different cars so have the opportunity to check.
Today, I am mostly driving a Vauxhall Zafira. :( It indeed indicates the correct side.
Support the theory - 1
Not support the theory - 0.
Will update the total each tome I get another car.

Some newer veichles have an arrow on the fuel light.

It is ment to point to which side the filler is on. Obviously this isn't the case on brav's as it is a circle, but the vauxhall vivaro, merc sprinter and the skoda octavia this seems to be true :)

Stop deluding yourselves, there's just no truth in it! - lol

I've also just checked the British Jaguar as an afterthought
- and that's the same as my Japanese built Daihatsu, petrol filler on the left N/S, but pump icon hose on the right of the gauge.
