I hope the Boo boys can come up trumps again on a technical issue! It's driving me nuts!

(I just spent ages typing out this post and lost it so I hope it works this time!)

I have a very annoying problem- At random points of the day, for no reason, my PC will lose connection to the internet. It seems at times that it's only my PC, and all other PCs on the network still work. That doesn't make any sense to me. I'm pretty sure i still have access to the LAn when this happens, but not to the internet. Is that possible? What's going on?

More often than that however, is the entire network loses connection to broadband until the hub is turned off and back on again. Seems to happen about ever 15 minutes today! Driving me insane!

We're about to set up a server in our ofice to hold a part of the company's website that's just to large for the ISPs server, and it would obviously be hopeless for people to access if we have to be on hand all through the night to reset it all the time!! What's the problem and how can it be fixed?

do you have to reset the hub or the modem/router to the internet?

I'm not sure what you have equipment wise but i find that 1 good modem/router/switch combined is better than lost of cheap parts bodged together.

If you are going to host why not have the connection coming into one PC which does the firewall and website, then out a second network card to the rest of the network. more secure and easier to control when setup correctly

if you do have a router check that its not trying to renew its IP every x amount of time.

this may sound stupid but a friend of mine had the same problem, what kind of router is it u use? He was using a lynksis wireless router that kept doing the same thing, He eventually found that the problem was caused by the unit over heating, the internal electronics were arranged in such a way that two chips were facing each other, and the heat they generated was making them lock up, freezing the network! To solve it he simply stood the router on its end, so the heat rose up and away from the chips, and it works fine now! Might be a long shot but worth a look!!
Hope u get back online! By the way, ive just e-mailed u regarding dials. Cheers!

also you could try flashing the router incase it's a common problem and they have done a fix for it!

Sounds like you have a phone plugged in somewhere without a filter on it.

Also, with regards to the hosting server, I take it you are only hosting part of your site, and that you will be firewalling with the server on a DMZ.

If you need more help email me and i'll see what I can do.

;)

Thanks for the help guys!
After posting this I phoned customer support and they told me turning the router off for 30 mins would fix it, rather than the couple of mins I had previously turned it off! Don't really se how that can really make a difference- maybe it was overheating! It's seemed to work for now anyhow!

It's a "Voyager 205" Router by the way. Because of where it is, we've actually got it standing on end, so I'll try and lie it flat in case it's getting hot as it is.

I've tried looking for upgrades, and can't find any, and I'm pretty sure there are no phones plugged in without filters.

Well it's worked for now anyway!
When I get the server sorted I'm sure I'll be back for advice!

Thanks!

that router is a bag of shite, and bt shouldnt send them out, I know I have one.
You need to go buy a netgear, then you will have no problems. I would if I had any money to my name.

Looks like I spoke too soon! It just happened again and needed resetting!

It turns out we do have one phone in the house without a filter- When the guy way installing my parents built-in cupboards, the muppet built them right over the phone socket with a phone plugged in, meaning we can't get to the socket to unplug it! I'll look into it, maybe we can unplug it at the phone end and modify that a bit!

Will the phone line not pull out of the back of the phone, if it does you could put your filter in at that end, you may have to use another length of phone line though, thats what i had to do once
