i know i am being a right retard here...

i know u can run a amp in 4 ohm or 2 ohm.... what i want to know is how do u set it up to run from 1 to the other...

reason i ask is cos i am gonna buy this sub package

http://digitalsounddirect.co.uk/shop/product/products_id/1082.html

the sub is 4ohms but if i want i can swap it for the 2 ohm sub and run the amp in 2 ohms which is more power!!! how do u set up 4 - 2 ohms is it head unit dependant etc

Matching amps to speakers....

All I can tell you from home hi-fi experience is that amps can typically drive a range of impedances, and this is stated by the manufacturer. You don't need to adjust anything, the amp adapts itself to the load.

I however, know nothing about car audio!

In home hifi attaching the amp to a speaker with an incorrect impedance can cause the following problems; too high a current draw burning out the amp, loss of frequency range, clipping of waveforms (read distortion).

I may be wrong but i thought it was just a switch on the side, like you would use to change between 2/3/4 channel modes? Cant check anymore as all ICE has gone!

hey Smee ok let me get this right you have an amp that is capapble of 2ohm yes the sub is a dual voice coil well its easy to set up mate all you do is link the 2 positive sides together and the 2 negatives together from the amp

so it goes like this amp has 1 + connect this to BOTH positives on the sub and amp has 1 - connect this to BOTH - on the sub and your done :D
nothing headunit depending on it youst the wiring does it all

so ur saying do this.. (the second fig down)

ok.. sooo

y do i have an option of buying a 2 ohm sub and a 4 ohm sub..

4 ohm

http://digitalsounddirect.co.uk/shop/product/products_id/1686.html

2 ohm

http://digitalsounddirect.co.uk/shop/product/products_id/1685.html

sorry i know this is confusing... but surely if its a 2 ohm sub already i dont need to wire it up different its got to be an amp setting :S i dunno i am so confused but need to order this wednesday

the sub is still a 2ohm CAPABLE sub it is ready as a 2ohm but it has to be wired and yes the second diagram is correct connect both the positives together on the sub and both negatives together to enable the 2ohm the dual voice coil is 2 parts working together in sync when the source is the same you could run 2 amps on the voice coils but would have to be EXACT SAME in every way thats why you get the 2ohm safe amps its a hell of a lot safer than trying to get 2 amps the exact same specs and running :)

ok u have confused me lol

so the 4 ohm sub will work as a 2 ohm sub if i wire it up like diagram 2?

cos then u went on about being dual voice coil so surely that the signal for the other coil. so tht still in 4 ohm...

why is it so hard i am so thick its unreal

just wire it up :D

the dual voice coil works in the equivelent of 2 subs thats why there is 2 sets of connectors hook them all up in series plus to plus neg to neg

ok thanks mate so for part 2 lol

http://manuals.harman.com/JBL/CAR/Ow...%20OM%20LR.pdf

here is the instruction manuel for the amp lol

even tho its a mono block amp its has 4 terminals incase i want to put on a second sub.

do i wire it up like on page 3 fig 3 and then use the rockford way of wiring it up as u mentioned above

or

do i run 2 lots of wires from the amp to the sub and put them in straight in to all 4 terminals???

i never use pdf readers so can comment on what your saying but i know what you mean its a mono 1 channel amp but has 4 terminals this just makes it easy to install 2 subs to it directly either way you want to wire it up will work you can have 2 sets of wires coming from the amp connecting to the 2 sets of terminals or just 1 set of wires wired up the way in the second diagram both ways work the same regardless
