Hi all, just wondering if anyone can help, ive recently purchased one of these (bargain i thought at £50):

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HP-Compaq-d530-P4-2-4Ghz-USDT-Ultra-Slim-PC-256MB-40GB_W0QQitemZ200077025184QQihZ010QQcategoryZ179QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Mine however has a 2.6ghz celeron processor in it but the motherboard/ chipset is the same. i have upgraded the RAM to 2gb(maximum is 4GB) and put in a 300GB hdd. I have read on the net that as this motherboard is a 478pin a 3.0ghz or 3.2ghz pentium 4 processor can be used but i do not understand the 400/800fsb and L2 cache stuff. my question is, how easy is this to do? What would need changing? And would it make a noticeable difference?

and finally- would having 4Gb of ram be pointless with such a small processor-2.4ghz celeron? sory its a bit long winded, cheers

L2 cache is on the actual processor.
i dont really understand your question...

4gb of ram would be wasted in that system.

sorry, im confusing myself aswell, i just want to know if changing to a pentium 4 3.0ghz would be noticeably faster. if yes then is it a straight swap with the celeron one thats already in there?

i'm fairly certain you can get an old 478pin P4 that does 3 Ghz.
With the extra cache, about 1mb i guess, yeah, you'll notice the difference, and it shoiuld just be a straight chip swap.

the only thing you would need to worry about is can the mother board actualy take up to the 3.0ghz but id say it should and the front side bus speed and l2 cache shouldnt really matter as im sure that the fsb will slow down automaticly if the board can handle the 800fsb that the p4 4.0ghz has

What is the make and model number of you motherboard? Its best to check that it is compatible using your motherboard manufacturers website - they usually have a list saying which ones will work. I think (but not sure) the 1mb L2 cache processors had Prescott core and quite a number of 478 motherboards did not support them. Usually say prescott ready on the box.

If your heatsink and fan is an intel supplied one then it should be ok, if its not and its really small probably best getting a new one - they are only about £4

***Ian, selling items on the forum is for Members only. Stop trying to circumvent the rules, ya shifty scouser !!***

since when did giving something away absolutely free count as selling? Ash H would have absolutely nothing to lose. I know the rules too, and am happy that my current mobo and gfx card are good, otherwise i might have to ask Ian to replace them since i got them from him, here, a year ago ;) (does that count as positive feedback ?)
anyhow, i dont see a prob with giving things away at all, and see no justification for the deletion of Ians offer to Ash to give him one for free. even if he is a scouser which (dont mean much to me anyway, being a Jock)

Thanks for the nice words Buzz. LOL.

I forgot you had that mobo off me.. (I can't even remember which one it was come to think of it!)

And indeed, I was offering something free. Is that not allowed? How is that free Motherboard and GFX card Buzz? :)

re

doe sthat mean people can 'give things away' and someone can 'give' someone some money totally unrelated to the previous giving action of course.

lol

just kidding,
