*OT* a section of movie into an animated gif...howto?

I know theres a few techy wizards on here (I do CAD tho, so not my forte')
Anyone know a method taking say a 5 second clip of a film and making it into an animated gif (that I can use for my avatar)

If I can pull this off I will become a legend

Theres shareware programs coming up on google, i presume youve tried these and they dont work, theyre normally restricted rubbish whereby once its installed and youre ready to go, you get it all setup press convert and it wants you to upgrade, but some might be worth a check??????

Youve probably done this already though...
