General original coded fiat cassette radio 97

A freinds has a p reg diesel with the original radio.Having had the battery off it just shows "CODE" He has the code no but cant enter it because he cant get it to display ---- the starting point for code entry.
All a bit basic but he has tried everything and cannot make it work.
What is the proceedure please. Could it be locked for some reason?

Hi try this it worked for me, from WSM.

Turn on radio.
"CODE" is then displayed.
Followed by "_ _ _ _"
Enter 4 figure code using keys 1-6.
Confirm the code by pressing any key 1-6 or volume.
Radio emits a bleep on correct code.

1ERR wait 20 sec
2ERR wait 1.5 min
3ERR wait 5 min
4ERR wait 20min
5ERR wait 50min

14ERR permanently locked

Hi again

It is meant to show _ _ _ _ automatically after you turn on. It may be that it has passed its limit of attempts to enter the code? If so it's a dealer job I think.
