General opinions on 1.4 engine

I have the 1.4 8v Active Sport, and in all honesty would say that if you can stretch your cash to the 1.4 16v Sporting then do it.

The 8v is a very smooth engine, but i am looking jealously at the faster models as the 8v is a bit short on power and can get frustrating on hills, especially down 'ere in Devon. oo-arr...........:)

driving a 1.4 16v eleganza - done just over 2,000 miles now and what a change - even more fun! Has really loosened up to be quite a quick car now - loving it.

Beg, steal or borrow the xtra cash to get a G. Punto Sporting 1.4 16 valve....it's a completely superior car to the other G. Punto variants.
Go to fiatsupasaver to get an idea of the prices.
It's the best, nicest driving car that I've ever owned and I've had some very expensive cars.

Yep as said the 8v is asthmatic and its got a drink problem most of the time as you have to thrash it to go anywhere in a hurry. At a bear minimum get the 1.4 16v in whatever trim you want i.e Sporting / Dynamic.

Depending on your driving style and cash consider the 1.9 JTDm Multijet as it is fast as fook and will return 40mpg driving around town like a madman :D and 55 on a motorway run but will only be worth it if you do at least 12,000 miles a year.

To my opinion, the 1.4 16v engine is just enough for the size/weight of the car,....can go quick enough but have to rev it above 4000 rpms to get the satisfactory result.

My opinion is that the car would be perfect with a 1.6 16v petrol engine of about 110-120HP (something like the Alfa 147 Engine....) but Fiat for some reason decided not to put a more powerful petrol engine from the start (even the 1.8 130hp from the HGT would do) and we are now waiting the 1.4 T engines...:slayer:

Personal opinon only, but i would beg, steal and defraud to get the little extra for the 1.9. Have driven both I prefer the spread of torque and power you get with the 1.9 across the entire rev range, even though it costs a bit more.

Just out of interest, has anyone driven both the 120bhp and 130bhp engines and noticed any meaningful difference between the two?

That ofcourse is your opinion that you are more than entitled to.
It's not "a little more" though, theprice of the 1.4 sporting is £9100 and the price of the 1.9 MultiJet is £10,500.....alot for an engine difference.
Possibly the best variant is going to be the Sporting 1.6/1.8 Turbo due out....that will be worth the price difference

I've read up that the 1.4 is the most reliable engine of the bunch and the 1.2 shares many of the failings of the 1.2 found in the Mk2 (which I have at the moment).

I'd love to know your sources since when is any petrol engine more reliable than any diesel tbh. Petrol engines are simpler which means servicing and repairs can be cheaper but reliability is worse as they rev higher which means more wear etc. Diesel engines are built to a lot finer tolerances because they need to be solid due to the massive compression ratios used.

Also the new 1.2 has none of the failings of the mk2 as it has a revised cooling system which stops head gaskets failing at 30k! only problem with it is its far to underpowered for the size and weight of the GP.

My dads old diesel has 180k on the clock and hasnt had a service since 24k and its still going albeit it needs a oil change now as its sludge!.

My apologies, thought its was only a few hundred pounds diff. £1400 is actually quite a lot!!

Is the engine the only difference between the two or as the petrol is so much cheaper do you lose any equipment as well?

ive got the 1.4 8v active sport - done about 15k now since feb. it does drink a fair bit, but then again i suppose its your driving style, driving like an old man it would be easy to get 50/55mpg out of it, but at the rate i drive it, im lucky to get 45mpg!

tbh id rather of got the 1.3 90bhp dynamic, bit more poke in the engine and better fuel efficency.

You do well to get 45mpg to gallon from it! Have only got that from crusing up the motorway at 70. Never hit the dizzy heights of an average 50mpg yet on a run!

it probably doesnt help that i have an extra 10kilos sub and amps in the back :slayer:. i force myself only to press the gas pedal very lightly.

when the loan is repaid, i may go for the 1.4/6 turbo if it comes out. im tired already of having only 77bhp!

It is exactly the same spec'd car - there is a difference in the design of the alloy wheels.....both look nice.

I think Fiat diesel engines are probably the best in the world, but my goodness they are expensive.
