Hi

Just had my 48k service done...they think my rear drums are screwed, the shoes have apparently burnt all the way through and have started wearing the drums out...fiat want £100 ish to fix (i can do it myself) so i thought i would go for the disc conversion on the back as i am spending the money....

What do i exactly need? All the parts will be comming off a HGT local to me? I must know every single thing.....Please help!!

Also, i need to replace my slave cylinder, i have tried to find a kit to repare it but can not find one...fiat want £40 for one new!does this sound reasonable? do you know anyone else i should contact?

Thanks in adanvce for any help from anyone!

OK, going on what you've said its probably not a good idea if you do the disc conversion :)

If you are fitting discs you don't need a slave cyl, thats the bit which goes in a drum. Discs have calipers.

No no no...Sorry tom... i need a slave cylinder regardless cos mine is on its way out!!

As for the conversion... i guess i need calipers, discs, handbrake cables, and probably the hoses themselves? But is there anything i am over looking?

Do you know of a good supplyer of fiat stuff?

Apparently on the 1.8ihlx they have one which does both the clutch and brakes? is that right?

tom i got a brava 1.6 thinking of getting the rear brakes off a hgt no problems with mine.... sorry to hear this paul... will it fit a brava... and wat do i need exactly.. thanks buddy

I have a HGT, clutch and brake slave cylinder the same thing, cost me £80 for one inc fitting at local garage

Don't you mean MASTER cylinder? The brake slave cylinder is inside the rear drum (if you have them) and the clutch slave cyl is ontop of the gearbox.

There is a slave cylinder for the clutch, as far as i know this is also the slave for the brakes....

Anyway, that needs replacing as it leaks slightly...

But back to the conversion, what do you think i need to complete it? all off a HGT

Paul R

They are still two totally different things and at either ends of the car. You can't replace it if you don't know what you need to replace.

The ONLY thing shared between the brakes and clutch is the fluid resevoir.

The list of bits for the disc conversion has been covered time and time again, have you searched the forum?

Ok....forget the slave cylinder!!!its just confusing matters....

The slave cylinder for the clutch is worn and needs replacing, it has no connection to the rear brake conversion...i just wanted to know if you knew of a good place to buy it from.

As for the conversion. i have been through it time and time again too...as far as i know i need the following....

-two discs
-two calipers
-cables
-hoses if poss

But do i need the hub assembly itself? as i have some saying yes and no?

Sorry to bore you again tom

Paul R

£25 from fiat for the clutch slave cyl. They made the car, usually best to get parts from them too.

Always and I mean ALWAYS buy new hoses and new pipes for brakes, NEVER EVER reuse old ones.

You forgot the caliper brackets and the drum hubs probably won't take discs. Most likely new solid brake pipes too as I'm pretty sure they are different.

Drum hubs will fit the Disc hubs, checked on my parts CD and they are the same type.

So i dont need the hubs? The discs bolt straight on? Great

Nope, even Bahney has fitted his old existing 1.4 hubs onto the discs, no need to change your hubs at all. Thats a couple of quid saved. LOL.

@ MR/MRS ANON

What do you think i will need to do the whole conversion then?

I have a 1.8i HLX and the parts are off a 20I HGT?

Thanks alot for your help

Paul R

As far as i remember you will need:

Calliper Mounting Brackets
Callipers
Disc Cover (Sits Behind Disc)
New Discs
New Pads
New Handbrake "Cables"
New Brake Pipes (Atleast to the connector mid way up the underside of car)
Lots of bolts and lots of time.
