Just changed the oil and filter on my 2016 Ducato 130 Motorhome.
I let the oil drain out overnight as I needed to go and buy a new copper sump plug washer the next morning.
Fitted new filter and filled with 5.5 litres of oil.
Ran the engine for 5 minutes and let it stand for a while.
Checked the oil with the dipstick and it appears over the maximum mark.
I do find it difficult to read the dipstick as the oil in the tube seems to spread all over the dipstick.
Checked it again, wiped the dipstick and checked it again, I’m still not sure where the level is, one side looks on “max” and turn it over and it looks 5mm above the maximum mark.
Apart from draining the oil out and filling again with less, I’m not sure what to do.
Any good advice would be appreciated.

Hi

Fresh CLEAN oil can be a pain..

Try 'Standing off' the dipstick

3" short of inserted..then 2"

Discover at what point you see a reliable level on the base of the dipstick :)

I posted a GUIDE recently

The prescribed fill with filter change is 5.7 litres, though I never seem to get quite that much in at a change. (Yes, checking via the dipstick can be difficult!)

I must admit that I now tend to underfill slightly against that guideline and then let the dashboard indicator inform me if I'm significantly low.

In your case, especially if you've left it to drain overnight, I very much doubt it will be critically overfilled if 5.5 litres have been added.

Suggestion to help with the 'Dipstick' who designed the dipstick. With a hot engine parked on the level remove the dipstick and leave engine to stand overnight. Then try the dipstick in a hopefully dry tube (one shot)

Recently changed oil in my 2017 Ducato. Drained overnight pointing slightly downhill. Took more than 5.5 to get to half way (on leval wait another 24hr) difficult to read. last year was only 5l.
What was different? time to drain, this year before changing sensor said low leval. This is at rear so depending on angle parked at makes a difference to dipstick level.
