Ive got a 1999 jtd, owned it from new, its developed an oil leak which the garage have diagnosed as the turbo, is this likely? I thought the turbo oil feed/return pipes would be more likely. the car runs fine, no smoke and no power loss, can someone give me some advice, thanks.

A knackered turbo would show itself by loads of blue smoke on idle...
I have a look to see where the oil is coming from...
Or take it somewhere else!

Thanks for the reply, but smoke on idle would indicate the turbo leaking internaly, what I really wanted to know can turbos leak externaly, except from the oil feed/return.

The only oil a turbo should see is from its' own feed/return, as you say. As the turbos' bearing is sandwiched between the inlet and exhaust turbines, any oil leak from the turbo will either be ingested by the engine if it's on the inlet side seal or pushed out into the exhaust tract if it's on the exhaust side shaft seal.

Oil can pass through the exhaust side of the turbo if the engine itself has an internal oil leak, but that would display the same symptoms irrespective of whether the engine has a turbo or not.

Thanks widemouthfrog, thats what I was thinking, I'll take for a second opinion, wonder what else is around the turbo area that could be the source of the leak? It's been a good old tub and has'nt really ever cost us a penny.
