Oil for JTD?

I am going to change the oil and filter before I head to Europe next month!

Is 10w40 ok to use in the JTD? Dunno how it will be in the cold?

I can get 6 litres of Castrol Magnatec/Mobil Super S/Motul 6100 Synergie/Fuchs Titan XTR 10w-40 and
a high quality OEM Spec and approved oil filter manufactured by UFI" for about £35 depending on oil selected.

Which of these would you say is the best? I have no idea, I tried reading about few posts and wiki about oil but I am still clueless lol

16v jtd - 5w 40 for cold climate
10w 40 for moderate climate

go for the 10 w imo

Assuming it's a standard 1.9 JTD popular concensus has the 5w40 semi-synthetics as being the better option :idea3: 10w40 is pretty 'chunky' stuff in a modern diesel engine.

As it happens I run Selenia WR 5w40 in my tweaked JTD engine as I get good cold starting (less dense oil to crank) and in chillier weather (in theory, at least) the oil should circulate to the engines vital organs pretty quickly. Selenia oils are/were standard on Fiat group cars, have a squint at this link for the Selenia oil spec:

Its an 04 stuart, but they didnt change to JTDm untill second half of 04 so should still be the same.

I was reading and it says that the 10w40 works better on small journeys? apart from this trip to europe I usually only drive a few miles at a time.

I run the Stilo about 5miles to work when I'm in Inverness (and oddly enough the same distance back) plus once a fortnight (usually) the 160-odd miles round trip to Dinnet for a weekend. I'm running 5w40 with no issues apparent.

Fundamentally, I guess it boils down to how much you want to spend on the oily stuff and how often you want to change it.

Generally you can't really go wrong if you follow the advice in the owners manual and if opinions differ across the www then I'd just stick in it the oil at the viscosity that Alfa suggest

10/40 or 15/40, i find using 15/40 makes the engine less tappety.

I know I am noob to the whole oil thing but I was reading and 10/40 is for -10 so wouldnt 15/40 be like -5? (complete guess) with the weather recently its been like -13 up here might take that into consideration?

the 10 (10w/40) is the viscosy (sp) /thickness of the oil and the 40 is the weightof it iirc, dunno if its temp related tho
