Technical Oil change warning light

hi anybody know if poss to turn off oil change warning i only do low milage 2years old in march 1st sevice jan 09 at 4000miles ligt flashing to change oil present milags 6500 i was going to get small service in march when 2 years old.1.3multijet lounge red with red leather.

Your engine moniters oil quality and the light comes on when it feels it needs changed.

I'd get your dealer to check it out- it shouldn't perform enough DPF regenerations to degrade the oil that quickly.

Jack, 2500 miles in a year probably means you either make lots of short trips or very few long journeys. If the latter then there might be a DPF update that you can get the dealer to carry out that might overcome this problem.

If the former then it is more understandable as the engine might have failed to complete some regeneration cycles fully. Have you had the "filter clogged" light come on very often and if so this could be part of the reason for the early warning message to change the oil.

I had my last oil change 2200 miles after my first annual service and that was with me doing many longer trips and when round town using lower gears to keep the revs above the 1800RPM as that helps keep the filter clear.

I have had the software update and still need to take the car on a 20mile trip at least once a fortnight to clear the "filter clogged" warning light.

As the car had it's service over 12 months ago I would get it in now and not wait until March.

thank you for information i only do short journeys but still think that oil should do more miles ,i think its based on time .i ordered care dec07 built jan08 delivered mar08
first service indicator came on in jan09 at 4000miles short service done including filter change 2nd serive indicator ie change oil came on jan2010 ex 12months from 1st only done 2500 miles from 1st service. going to take in for service and get it checked to cover 3rd year warranty, will keep posted

As the posters above have said. using the car on short journeys will cause the oil to degrade within a lower mileage. it's how many cold starts you do which is what really kills the oil.

Car doing exactly what it should. Why did you want a diesel when you do such low mileage? You will spend as much money on oil as you will save on fuel economy.Unfortunatly, your sales executive obviously didn't qualify your needs enough and tell you about the disadvantages of a diesel with a DPF.

Even without the cost of extra oil changes I very much doubt that the diesel would give a decent saving in economy @ such low yearly mileages unless you owned it for a long time.

Many times when I sold cars I would try educate people on the options regarding diesel vs petrol. Many people just assume your agenda isn't to have a happy customer but to screw them over in someway.

Ah, so people do occasionally accept that us salesmen aren't always Lucifer's minions? Funniest thing I ever heard was a solicitor telling me that we were all money grabbers. I fought back.

To be fair, I have had a few instances similar. "I do three thousand miles a year, but a diesel will do four bajillion miles to the gallon, so i'll save millions, dave from down the pub / my son / daughter / friend told me so."

No disrespect to salespeople but I always do my research before I go into the showroom when I make any purchase so for all intents and purposes the salesman is useless for me because 99% of the time I probably know more than they do But for the people that are undecided or don't know what they're talking about a salesperson can be a valuable asset

The problem is when you get people who think they know everything about cars but don't and just won't listen to the salesperson :doh:

In my opinion, complete oil degradation in 2.5k suggests there's an issue somewhere causing excessive regeneration cycles............... unless the oil didn't need changing at the first service, which means it's actually done 6.5k over 2 years before needing changing- which sounds more acceptable.

Was the oil changed at the first Service in Jan 09?

Its not the 2.5K, its the short journeys that will also trigger the computer to light up.

Reading that Danny am I right in thinking it doesn't directly measure or sense oil quality, but rather is programmed to "know" after "x" regenerations the oil is likely to be "y"% degraded?

Thats correct, its an algorithm calculated within the engine management ecu
