One of the other train services mentioned in that article is the one from Stockport to Stalybridge and it runs through Denton station, my own local rail link. It runs once a week in one direction only, towards Stalybridge. There is a local campaign to get the service extended to once or twice a day, in both directions of course.
The station is on the north side of the M67 and on the south side of that motorway is a large Sainsbury's supermarket with a car park that is only ever more than 50% full on the two days before Christmas. I actually pointed this out to two of our local councillors a couple of years ago and they agreed this was an opportunity going begging. My point was that as there was a footpath from the station under the motorway to the car park, surely approaching Sainsbury and pointing out that commuters parking for free in their car park could bring dividends in homecoming shoppers doing their shopping on the way home or nipping in to buy papers, fags and sandwiches on the way to work.
We heard nothing until over a year later when the same two councillors were in the local paper crowing that they were lobbying to have the service improved. Incidentally, the line is used several times a day by goods trains.
