Who decides that a post gets closed down and HOW do they decide?

Clearly, there are dozens of off topic posts, which just run their course
The 'immigrant' post started with some views on a hit and run incident and evloved from there
A lot of poeple were very interested - something that's clear from the fact it got 64 replies before being locked

We were then told to go and talk elsewhere, but why?
If the thread was of no interest to you the answer is very simple - ignore it and go join in a thread that you do find interesting
What's the point of joining in a thread just to say that you aren't interested?
Posting "zzzzzzzzzzzz" just says to me that you don't have the wit, imagination or interest to add anything worthwhile

So the question is - what off topic posts will survive? Clearly the amount of response is irrelevant
Will subjects that make you really think get locked?

Can we only talk about burn-ups and ICE or maybe the weather?

Re: Re: 'Off topic' posts

Yeah, not tooooooo predictable keef
Brave of you to put your hand up though

Re: Re: Re: Re: 'Off topic' posts

Another good one there, Mike

Oscar Wilde eat your heart out

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: 'Off topic' posts

...I believe the reason as to why these posts get locked is due to the fact that everyone has expressed their opinions which has resulted in conflict and dispute, and are no longer contributing anything constructive and is left to the lowest common denominator so ppl are taking this too personal and are biting back at other ppls posts regardless. I believe this is a good idea; as you can get your point across, ppl can read your view and c were ur coming from without the matter getting out of hand and the forum becoming a childrens school yard.

Rant Over.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: 'Off topic' posts

OK. Thanks for the response, Mike. What you've said is actually a pretty good description of what happened in the immigrant thread.

It's a shame, though, that when something interesting takes off, a few idiotic or personal replies from people with nothing to say gets the thread shut down

It means that anyone just has to throw a few insults around and that's it. Lockdown.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: 'Off topic' posts

Mr Baffled,

Your post was very interesting and factual.

I enjoy reading and posting on this "Forum", but unfortunately a while ago a few people took my **** taking too seriously. I dutifully apologised to all concerned (Mr Bahney however refused to accept my apology and went on to say that he would apologise to me in 6 months if I continued to behave - I now have just under four months to wait).

A Forum is a Forum as far as I am concerned. It then ceases to be a Forum when it is censored. A bit like Communist Countries I suppose.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: 'Off topic' posts

I as well as the next bloke like a laugh, I think i was one of the few that didn't take ur sarcastic contributions to heart RR, i find them amusing but as you probably realise what u say in ur head < as funny or appropriate as it seems> u cannot express it the same way in writing, thus some ppl will c the intentional funny side of it but at the same time others will be offended. it swings n round-a-bouts. As with all sociaties/clubs etc there do need to be some sort of guidelines otherwise there would be chaos but at the sametime there needs to be the liberty of free speech somewhere is the correct medium and i reckon this forum as a whole will start to understand and take posts in their stride yet ppl will re-read over their own posts b4 sending them up.

Hello RR

I don't know what actual exchanges you're talking about because I'm only a recent visitor here. I guess we're all on probation one way or another. 4 months isn't such a long time :)

I own a Bravo, which is the reason I first came here. It's not the best car I've ever owned. Or the worst.

I'm not interested in it's top speed, in upgrades, add-ons or any other sort of mod. But I don't go to all the numerous threads on these topics and just add 'zzzzzzz' to them. What's the point?

Like you said a forum is a forum. If you (one) don't like talking with people a forum is a pretty wierd place to hang out. If some people are set on censorship then make a private forum and just let your mates in

It's important not to be shouted down by grunting, reactionary Neanderthals, here or anywhere else

(If you're angry about this post it probably isn't aimed at you because those I'm refering to are unlikely to realise they've been insulted)

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: 'Off topic' posts

A bit of a poser here, gents.

It's my fault in the first place that this "Forum" has Moderators to do the censoring because I took the **** out of people and their modified cars. Some people found it funny, but others took grave exception to my ramblings hence the Censorship.

Personally, I don't consider this "Forum" my personal property or that I have any right to say who can and cant say exactly what they please (as long as it's not personally abusive).

One individual went so far as to set up an "Anti Roger Ramjet" Website and others openly (and stupidly) boasted to having "hacked" into my computer, saying that several "Forum" members had hacked me. Even more stupidly, one advised me to get a Firewall (which I already have - Ironically the Firewall I have is industrial strength and used in businesses). Another said I had pictures of Vauxhall Astras on my PC (more untrues) and yet another said I had a crap screensaver. Ironically, I do not have and I never have had a screensaver as I just find them irritating.

One contributor pointed out that it was highly illegal to hack - nothing further was then said by the individuals concerned. Non the less; all the postings and threads were saved to and C Drives and also printed. Lots of "You cant prove it's" then appeared!!

Anyway............it just goes to show how personally some obsessive folks take "their" Forums.

I assume the Moderators will read this, so don't think I'm having a swipe........I'm just explaining how teh situation arose and all thos who contributed to the loss of their free speach.

NB A lot of personal abuse was previously directed at me whereas I never directed anything personally.

Like it or not; it's all true.

Hard Fact.

well said sir, back u all the way mate!!!

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: 'Off topic' posts

Thank you - whoever you are!

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: 'Off topic' posts

Maybe as I was the one who locked up the "Immigrant" post, I should explain why I did so.

I, and many others, are all for "off topic" posts, as it adds a little light hearted distraction. But when these posts become abusive, both in general and personally, and they start to go a little too far, I believe it is fair and proper that we move on to pastures new. Add that to the fact that that particular post had started to go round in circles, I felt it wise to move things on.

We musn't forget that this is a "FIAT Bravo Forum". I accept your point, Roger, that a forum is a place to discuss things, but the very fact that this place is called the "Bravo" forum, gives that subject top priority over anything else. Should you wish to discuss "Illegal Immigrants" or "The Labour Government" there are thousands of forums dedicated to these subjects. Sure, raise issues in here but this forum was designed with the main objective of being a Bravo resource.

I hope that's a reasonable explanation for you all and long may this place continue to be a place of open and fair discussion of all kinds :)

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: 'Off topic' posts

Well said,

I think it's more a case of people like to air their view on THIS forum, where their mates can see their views and pat each other on the back etc etc.

When I had by "bad" phase, I knew that the majority of "regulars" would all be up in arms regarding my dislikes of modifications and slating of Fiat's reputation when it came to reliability. This being the case, people will hammer their point home, where they are,

1. Aiming to irritate,
2. Know they will get a rapid and vitriolic response or,
3. Are bored.

I actually discovered this Forum one day at work when I was bored during a night shift. I thought I'd have a crack a winding people up (which in retrospect was very silly and childish of me - seeing as I'm 38).

But there you go.............strange but true.

Re: Re: 'Off topic' posts

I think that the reason we dicuss off topic posts is the fact that most people know each other on the forum and it is a lot better to talk about stuff with ppl which you know than a complete stranger who is up there own ass and there for i think that these off topic posts should carry on what is the harm of it if the post is clearly marked that it isn't to do with a FIAT or a BRAVO if you don't want to join in don't open the topic in the first place.

well to me it makes sense!

Re: Re: Re: 'Off topic' posts

It did to me too, but it's not me who censors them.

Re: Re: Re: Re: 'Off topic' posts
