I wanted to draw to your attention a problem which has come to light recently.

Certain cars are being stolen using the ODB port. This has been going on for some time with high value vehicles, mainly ones with keyless entry like BMWs and Landrovers.

Fiat 500s have been targeted recently. A device that can be purchased from the Interweb which is connected to the ODB port can bypass the ignition and/or code a blank key to allow the car to be started and stolen.

I have also learned that ODB port locks are now available to buy. I think I may invest.

The BMWs that have been taken have no mechanical key to start them, they are either keyless entry and starting or use the radio fobs that many new cars use.

The criminal then breaks a window codes a new key and drives away.

However the fiat 500 still has a mechanical key and don't have keyless entry or starting so you have to use the mechanical key to start the car. So they can code a key but unless they have the cutting pattern for a new key blade then they can't simply start it, they would need to break the steering long and start it directly off the ignition switch on the back of the ignition barrel.

Essentially far easier to break into your house and take the key for your 500. The BMWs and other cars stolen using the above methods are far more technological than fiat cars

Well they would be out of luck if they stole and drove off with the euro 6 up a hill. So I guess if you have a euro 6 1.2, live on a hill :)

The rental company near me had a camper van nicked and was taken in the same odb port way! was a transit van, keys still on the rack! drilled door lock and main barrel

Did they have this all happening on CCTV then, or is it assumed? Normally easier for them to pick them up on a low loader if mechanical keys are involved.
