O/T pc problems, help needed

so far after usin that damned bloody Macaffe security thing, thats now come off and been replaced, i did a scan etc on my pc and now everytime i turn my pc on its comin up with a window asking to run `xpupdate` i have a choice of either `run` or `cancel` , on start up ive noticed its takin a little longer to load up and i now can`t see my desktop screen picture, its blue, you can only see it when you shut down the pc or start it up, i can`t even change the desktop back ground picture as the window to change it won`t work properly, so for the mo i`m stuck with a flamin blue screen as a desktop background picture, any ideas anyone as i have no proper idea what i`ve done, and tbh i`m not a pc expert, it would be great if i could take my pc to someone who knows or soemone could call over to help, if possible

it would seem that xpupdate is usually a virus/trojan.

I suggest you get a virus scanner installed ASAP

Hello there MadGT...

I may be talking a load of balls but if this xpupdate thing is a virus/trogan it could have altered your windows shell... shell being the way windows looks i.e blue task bar and background..... run a virus scan AVG is free and generally good at removing trogans although i have the full McAfee Security setup which was obtained via the blessing of Mininova and i have had no problems.... im always online download loads and loads and no problems......

Cheers Karl, but i kinda fell out with Macaffe so i`ve installed norton anti virus, and norton ghost, i`ve used them before, so hopefully i should be able to get it sorted out, failin that i`ll try and get hold of someone who can help,

norton is a bugger for system resources, AVG is great and free.
might be worth running spybot search and destroy and/or lavasoft ad-aware.

To give yourself the best chance of clearing it, boot up in safe-mode (hold F8 whilst booting) and run your scans; safe-mode launches minimal services at startup, it can be nigh on impossible to delete programs once running if so designed
