Hi guys,

After a bit of advice on which laptop to buy!

I mainly use it for work and have microsoft word running, windows explorer usually 2-3 and maybe msn on in the background.

I have seen an HP 530 for £280 inc del. Had a play with it in the shop and it seemed like a decent machine.
Don't really want to go over that price but if a much better machine is available I would go up to £400.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Regards

Jay

cheers guys. What do you all think of the second one i posted?

Everytime i go to pay for it i keep thinking there could be something better!

im gonna do it...... im gonna click add to basket......

To be fair is hard to buy crap these days. most machines out there will be decent enough for your needs. The main thing to look out for is the RAM. You'll probs want to make sure you get 2GB of ram (or more), as vista itself can run a lil sluggish on 1GB. Processor speed, and the like, isnt really much of an issue for the tasks you've mentioned. And hard drive space is self explanatory. :)

Brand wise, I used to have an Advent 7036, and my mum has an Advent 7211. Mine being the daddy of its day, and the other being an entry laptop. Both have decent build quality. Infact, slightly better than the dell M1330 i'm using now days. (mouse pad and wireless switch are quite giving)

Working at PCWorld (URGH ITS HORRIBLE), I get to see quiet alot of machines, and they all have pretty decent build quality these days.

Goodluck with your purchase, and I hope some of the brand talk in this thread doesn't sway your decision. :)

as above, Vista wants plenty of RAM, you might consider restorign your laptop to XP as soon as you get it. it will be quicker!

and i think every manufacturer supplies XP media as you get donwngrade rights with the vista licence

Nah, first i've heard of that mate. At least with the ones we sell. They don't even come with a vista cd yet alone XP. You have to make your vista cd yourself with your own discs using some pre installed software.

well thank god i listened to your point about the ram being most important.

I had already ordered the hp one with 1gb ram before you posted but got an email yesterday morning saying my order had been cancelled due to mis-match of the biling address.

I was fed up after that as I was then told i would have to wait until monday for delivery..

Went along to P.C World and picked up a Toshiba L350-10L With 2 GB ram and a 17" screen. albeit more expensive.....

As we speak I am using 1.08 ram.... so far so good. Thanks for all the advice guys

Damn it, wish I'd seen this post earlier.

I cannot recommend this one enough:

£400 and you get a couple of quid change - I have bought three of these for my staff at work and one for the Father-in-Law. Core 2 duo, 2GB RAM, 120GB hard disk and you even get Vista Business AND XP Pro downgrade media (just in case you dont get along with Vista)

I currently have a works laptop but start a new job in two weeks who dont provide one... I'm definately getting one of these :)

to be honest, once I had seen the 17" screen, there was no going back! So much nicer to use with a bigger screen.

Thanks anyway!
