Seems to be very notchy, to me, wife thinks its OK. Is this a "feature" or is it due to my different use of the clutch pedal as in not puching it down far enough? Odd thing is if I do a smooth change without "forcing" it, it changes fine.

Don't know if its the same on the Mk2 Punto, but the change on my Mk1 has always been horribly notchy. I think its just the way these cars are. It didn't feel that bad until I got the Capri, which changes gear better than any modern car I've driven.

Gearboxes are different. I think my Punto's can be notchy at times, but I like the layout and the ratios (although I wish there was a 6th for Mway cruising). It depends on what you've had before it whether you think it's good or bad - I came to Fiat from Vauxhall, and find it great. Just had a Polo courtesy car and found that box to be smoother (just a bad layout and even lower ratios).

Mine becomes notchy after a lengthy ride through traffic. It seems that on some models the clutch plays alittle so the gear changing is not smooth.

If I'm going to hang onto it I feel better thats its nothing serious. Its always been like that apparently and is a very smooth change if you ease the gearlever rather than try rapid changes. Good ratios though as has been said. For a 1.2 its a very nippy car.

I got a 2000 1.2 8v as well and my gears are notchy as well I find if you are really gentle then usally they just go in fine, if your harsh then you get that horrible noise (had that many times!). The longer the drive for me the better the gear change. Must just be fantastic Fiat engineering again :D
