hi.could anyone help with a non start problem on my 55reg scudo jtd.
the van will crank but dosent start.
when i turn the ignition on the temp gauge goes to max and back to zero
two or three times.
reading the forum i see it could be the double relay causing the problem.
is this the brown 15 pin relay beside the battery as on the left side of engine bay there is only the glow plug relay there.
this brown relay has the name BITRON and the numbers 240109.
any other ideas other than this realy ?
any help would be great..thanks

First of all CONGRATULATIONS!!!! Finally, some one reads appropriate threads before posting a query!

Yes, it's the double relay.

You have nothing to lose by taking the relay out (it unplugs easily) and cutting the lid off. Use a thin strip of folded finest wet/dry (2400 grit?) to clean between the contact faces.

Tape the lid back on and give it a shot. I did this a year ago and it's still working!

scudo still not starting

hello. i have replaced the double relay and glow plug relay
to try and cure the non start problem.
the temp needle has stopped going to max and back three times
but the van will still not fire up.it will not even start with a tow.
plenty of fuel and good battery ,relays are new from dealer.cranks fine.
any ideas guys .thanks in advance..

Re: scudo still not starting

Stop solenoid?

Check for 12V on 'stop solenoid'. If present, disconnect wire and check solenoid for continuity. If open-circuit van won't start. Same if 12V missing.

Re: scudo still not starting

sorry ,van is a 2005 jtd with 120000mls

update scudo non start..

hi. further to the non start on my van 2005 JTD ..
i called the AA who spent 1hr testing various engine /electrical parts etc..
after changing the double relay/glow plug relay he tells me there is no power going to these parts and i have a broken wire ..where do i start looking for this wire problem.the van cranks but dosent fire..the temp gauge was at first going max and back 3 times but now is normal..no glow plug light on dash etc. but all
other lights are there when i turn on ignition .
thanks ..

Re: update scudo non start..

hmmmm..... you could short the glow plug relay (the two fat bolts/wires on the bottom) to get a supply to the glowplugs. Do this for 10 seconds then try to start.

Beware the big 'spark' you'll get when doing this - it's safe but disconcerting.....

If it starts, let us know. If it doesn't, come back and I'll have another look at the electrical diagram(s)

Hi there,

I have exactly the same problem with my Scudo. I have changed the relays and the flicking needle on the temperature gauge has stopped, but there is still no glow plug light on in the dash, and the van will turn over, but will not start.
Any information would be most appreciated.

i also have a 1999 scudo td with a non starting fault ,i have checked and fuel seems to be stopping at pump ,,my glowplug heater light went off and my injection /fuel rail problem management light came on ,,,all earths are ok:(

after spending a small fortune on various mechanics etc..
i found the fault myself by pure fluke..
the van was lying in my workshop for nearly 2 months when i had to move it for a delivery..
instead of pushing it out then back in after delivery i put the battery back in
and asked my work mate to shake the wiring loom as i cranked it over..
the van started straight away..
i then stripped the insulation and found a broken wire after 30 mins..
the van has been running great ever since and problem free..

the lesson here is we over complicate problems with the more modern
car/van when we should start at the basics [given the symtoms i had .]

p.s 4 mechanics had a look but could not start the van..only 1 of them suggested a broken wire somewhere but would not commit..

put the kettle on and buy a big packet of biscuits then start looking..

best of luck.

Anybody got anywhere with this fault?
I have checked and have found that the double circuit relay on my Scudo was working ok. It is the trigger to the relay which is missing.
Despite being able to trick the glow plug relay to operate manually by taking apart the old relay and activating the circuit by hand, the fuel pumps do not remain on once the relay has finished its timed, and so without a fuel supply, the engine will not fire. I have been told this could be a crankshaft sensor problem...anyone got any thoughts on this?

Hello everyone,
Hey stainless can you tell me the area in which you found the broke wire in side or outside the vehicle? As I am having the same problem with mine and going crazy look for the wire.

Thank you
