Hi,

First post, so hello everyone.

I am after some advice please. I am looking at getting a Ducato 2.3L Multijet 130 powered motorhome. It is 2012 and has only done 19K miles.

I have driven it and it drives very well but I am concerenced about a noise from the engine. There is a whine/hum that is rev related (i.e gets louder as the revs rise until it is over whelmed by the engine noise itself). It was something I immediately heard from startup, and continued whilst warm.

I have never driven a vehicle powered by this engine so I do not know how it should sound.

The reason I am concerned is that I bought a car that made a similar noise and it turned out to be oil starvation due to carbonsied oil from lack of oil changes,

The salesman did start up another Ducato powered van and it did sound similar but I am just not 100% convinced even now.

Perhaps some of you who drive Ducato powered vehicles could comment if they are a bit whiney/hummy. Perhaps it is a characteristic noise (drive belt, power steering pump, alternator etc) of the engine?

Many thanks for responses in advance. :D

Cheers
Mark

So, 39 views and no responses about whether you think your engines whine when they are revved?? :(

a) its the weekend so chill
b) a verbal description of a noise is 100% subjective one mans whine is another mans whirr, one mans turbo spooling sound is another mans turbo failure sound

I would expect to heaf turbo spooling and LHD and RHD exhaust sound different so rhd van will not sound same as lhd motorhome even if same engine.

Unfortunately, I have to make a decision whether to purchase, so no time for chilling.

Agreed, that is the problem with a verbal description, it is subjective.

I was really just hoping to get feedback saying that the engines are generally quiet, or yes, there is a bit of speed related whine/hum I.e a characteristic.

I have got a sound file but it cannot be uploaded. This will help but I need to find somewhere else to upload it to.

It isn't turbo though, it isn't a whistle like that. I did a few more tests today when I was looking over it and the power steering affects the tone of the whine. When the wheels are turned at idle, the tone of the whine drops as the engine speed drops. Hardly conclusive though.

I think I will have to get a mechanic to witness as I think this is the only way to be sure.

Thanks.

Hey mate, the 2.3 is normally pretty quiet for a diesel. You want to inspect the the drive belts for any wear and the pulleys. If the tone changes with the power steering drop the belt off andd start it up. If its gone you know its sonething on the drive belt side.
Fixed one with a wine on it todat and it ended up been the timing belt. Heavy ingress of red dirt and the belt was partially cracked. High mileage though.

Be good if you could upload the sound.

Hi Fozzylad,

Thanks for that. I have a mechanic scheduled to look at it but he is on the same lines as you. Do you know what else is driven by this belt?

I would upload sound but I do not have anywhere to do so. I may look at Dropbox. I was hoping to be able to upload on this site but it appears to be pictures only.

Thanks for your help.

No problem. There is a small stretch belt for the aircon. Then on the main drive belt it runs the power steering ,alternator an idle pulley and tensioner.

Not sure if yours has it but there is a small electro valve that controls the waste gate for the turbo. Its located right in the center of the plenum chamber on the white windscreen frame. ( in center when you open bonnet). Its mounted on rubber bushes, the valve does buzz as ut should but if the bushes fail it makes a whine noise
